Correct me if I am wrong someone, but aren't dwarf puffers brackish? Brackish water fish wouldn't go with a betta.

I think some smaller labyrinth fish would look nice next to a betta. Such as sparkling or licorice gouramis. You could easily do 3-4 in 5 gallons. They are tiny but once people notice them in my tank they don't stop commenting on how cute and colorful they are. Plus they have lots of personality. Sometimes all 7 sparkling gouramis will form a half circle around the glass to watch me. Otherwise I'd take the divider out and see if the betta got along with a school of pygmy cories or small tetras.

A pitbull in a 10, isn't that a bit overkill? I thought they grew in the 4"-5" range. But everything else is right on point.

My big question is why do you even bother with the divider? You could have more fish and a happier betta. The only reason why I would think of using a divider is if the betta is extremely agressive, and I stress extremely. Remember, neon tetras can out run a bad tempered betta as easily as I can outrun my bad-tempered landlord. Since a betta is primarily a top-mid water fish, cories or other small bottom feeders are pretty much out of the way.

Cherry Barbs
3 female bettas
trio of fancy guppies
endlers
small killifish
african dwarf frogs
shrimp
snails

If you took the divider out you could get a few things that would be fine with the betta:

pygmy corydoras
panda or habrosus corydoras
neon or other small hardy tetras
exclamation point or dwarf rasboras
dwarf pencilfish
kuhli loaches
otocinclus - ONLY if you have live plants and don't get them until the tank is mature with a bunch of algae
pitbull pleco
shrimp and snails

Considering in an 8 gallon you could have about 4-5 puffers depending on sex, personal agression, plants and some other factors. In a 5 you'd be pushing it if you had 2.

how about shorten your bettas half to 2 gallons and in the rest get a group of dwarf puffers. ive never had them but they are cool looking and in thier profile they say they dont get more than a inch and a half, and they are freshwater. for more info look at there profile.

If you could, I'd move over the divider a little bit. 5 gallons doesn't allow much room for fish. I'd move the divider over and make an 8:2 gallon ration instead of 5:5. Or, you could always knock down the divider and get a betta barrack. Then you could stock like a 10. Or, perhaps, forget about the divider altogether. There are alot of fish that will get along well with bettas and both the betta and the new tankmates will appriciate the extra space.

How about 2 female bettas? Maybe some Endler Livebearers? Just my thoughts, or use the other side as a fry tank, once the fry are large enough not to fit through the divider? heidi
