Hi all. My wife and I were just at our lfs and she found this fish only labeled as dolphins. it was about 7-8 inches long, greyish blue, forked tail, no markings to speak of. was shy, came out to look around just once in a while. I can't find any info about it at all, and the wife is gonna pick it up tomorrow morning. any ideas what it is?

I'm making a crazy assumption that it is a saltwater...

As you're not sure as to what it really is, I would avoid getting it till you know something about it, you would hate for something negative to happen. See if the owner/keepers of the lfs can tell you what it is, and where to find information on it...I'm gonna attach some link for you, see if any of them match...best of luck --heidi

ok those are the best two that showed up...I don't think I'd want to get one, as I'm afraid the care it would take, and the tank size it would take are not in my capabilities. Also it seems as though it may be illegal to sale dolphins on the common market (this could just be my conscience talk though ) Just make sure you have more info on the fish before you get it....Heidi

Perhaps it could be a baby whale. As i think they can get fairy big and whale is pretty close to dolphins. These fish are best kept alone otherwise they will harass each other with there electric fields.

Could it possibly be a Cyrtocara moorii, commonly known as a Blue Dolphin Cichlid?
We have two and they can reach that size.

Have a look here to see if that's it....[link=http://www.cichlidlovers.com/c_moorii.htm]http://www.cichlidlovers.com/c_moorii.htm" style="COLOR: #4778C7[/link]

U might be speaking of the Elephant nose or also known as Dolphin fish. Gnathonemus petersii is the correct name.

My LFS has them too but they say it can be aggressive. They are so cute & defenitely an eye catcher!

They say they can be so tame as to being hand held & VERY intelligent for they have a brain ten times of other fish.
I've thought about having one for my 72 gl but still learning more about them. They are aggressive to semi & specific meds need to be used when treating for diseases such as ICK,which are sometimes hard to find. Hope this helps...

Hi gang, thanks for all the help, but I found out what this thing is. It is a dolphin mormyrid (related to the elephantnose). We have read all about it and since almost everything in the tank is compatible, we will make one or two necessary adjustments and pick it up early this week.

the one we are getting will be the mormyrus tapiarus.
Once again thanks for all the replies

I recommend getting a grounding rod for these fish (your LFS should sell them), as Mormyrids are very sensitive to electric currents and signals.

Yes, they are very sensative and can be harassed by old coputur monditer singals, boom boxes, tiv signals etc etc. So i would get it in a play were it could have a lot of piece and quite.
