For long term feeding, goldfish food may not have the correct balance of necessary nutrients for tropical fish. FOr one or two days until you can get to a pet store and get proper food for your fish it should be okay, but you really should feed them a varied diet of tropical formula foods.

Hoping that there must be a word for everything I mean...

Try also to feed them normal Tropical fish foods, like Flakes & Granules.

In the short term , probably not, but tropical fish have higher metabolic rates because of the higher temperatures, and will often mature faster, move quicker , and need to replace their cells more often than coldwater fish- this means that their bodies will burn protiens and minerals etc quicker than coldwater fish. Tropical fish foods are formulated specifically for this and possible long term vitamin deficiencies will occur over the long term. You would notice the condition of the fish deteriorate in months rather than in a few days or weeks. So basically its ok to use as a standby in an emergency, but i wouldnt make a habit of it.

and yes - goldfish fed tropical fish flake may get extremely fat
