In that case, yes. To avoid this, quarantine your feeders, raise your own (guppys are EXTREMELY easy), and/or use frozen foods. Do you mean if you feed sick feeders, can the fish you're feeding get sick...? Because in that case, yes. It's very important to make sure that you're source of live food is healthy, or else you could end up with sick shishies. ![]() [hr width='40%'] I want to be what you always needed, Then I hope you'll see the heart in me" -Formerly known as the Ferretfish ![]() |

For example, Daphnia are wonderful organisms for feeding a tremendous variety of aquarium fishes, but frequently, when these are caught and offered for sale, they are bagged with Cyclops of one species or another. This is not usually problematic, but be aware that Cyclops are secondary hosts for Camallanus nematodes, and there are two risks to consider here. One, that any fish in your aquarium that have Camallanus will be able to transmit the nematodes more virulently to the other unaffected fish, because the parasites now have access to their secondary host. Two, that the Cyclops will bring in Camallanus with them, and infect your fish. This is a particular rish in American waters, because Cyclops and related copepods are known vectors of Camallanus oxycephalus, an endemic nematode of US and Central American waters. So if you feed live foods of any sort, some care and attention is needed. Particularly if those live foods are permanently aquatic creatures such as Daphnia or Cyclops. One answer of course is to cultivate your own in a pond in the back. But even then, surprises can turn up. Such as dragonfly nymphs that hide among the Daphnia, turn up in your aquarium, and suddenly develop a taste for your baby Guppies. Some dragonfly nymphs are large enough to attack a 2 inch fish. Of course, any live fish used as a feeder fish can pass on any of hundreds of disease organisms if it is not quarantined or raised in surroundings of known provenance hygeine wise. Again, exercise care! |
