what kind of fish would be okay to put into a 30 gallon tank with a moss wall? i have alot of livebearers, but i would think they'd be a bad idea as they like to pick food off things?! what about plecos, are they safe with moss walls?

thanks.

Chelle

moss wall? like java moss?

you could put almost anything in there as the fish aren't likely to eat the java moss in my experience. Just don't go with cichlids

Livebearers should be fine, as would a bristlenose.

For animals, the entire universe has been neatly divided into things to (a) mate with, (b) eat, (c) run away from, and (d) rocks. - Terry Pratchett

Livebearers are actually a good choice, if you want to keep the fry. The moss will give the females a place that they feel is safe to give birth, and the fry will hide in the moss to avoid being eaten.

Kitten has a moss wall in one of her betta tanks (wait, which one isn't a betta tank ) that looks really good

As calla mentioned, really any fish suited for a 30g tank will do, just no cichlids. Also no goldfish because I have heard of instances where they have eaten java moss, but they grow too large for a 30g anyway

Chelle,

I concur with both previous posters, you should be fine with a moss wall.

My platies only nip on plant matter that is on its way out (starting to decompose) and as such do me a favor by cleaning up.

Even if they do eat some moss it will just save you some trimming. So long as they don't pick at it too much while it's growing there should be far more moss than they can eat. The only fish to avoid are those that might completely destroy the wall out of boredom or curiosity like cichlids.

Actually some chichlids, namely apistogramma and other small SA ones would do great with a moss wall. Angelfish, rams, keyholes, festivums would all love a place for they're fry to hide.

wow... lotsa comments over night..

i have some livebearers in mind, but i have a common pleco that just needs somewhere to live, so, i imagine once i get the tank fully planted and everything, it should be safe to add my fishies! the tank is already cycled and whatnot, just a little bare with not swimming color.

thanks,
Chelle

without sounding redundant, it will look and do fine. Have you thought of what to attach the java moss to? Kitten had hers attached to plastic canvas (good stuff and it's cheap) She did finally remove it thinking it was causing trouble, but found out the trouble was being caused by a witchy little female betta

Go for it, I love the look myself, and will eventually get mine all coveredright now the java moss has taken over the bottom of the 10 gallon betta tank

But, as had been saidcichlids will inhale any and almost all plantseven duck weed as will goldies:%)

i just bought some of that needle-point board at a hobby lobby, its real fine mesh, but i attached suction cups to it and stuck it to the back wall, i made sure there are no spaces for the fish to get behind, but i used a little christmas moss and java moss. eventually i want to get the entire thing planted, but right now its just got a few random pet store plants i bought on sale. i dont even know what kind they are!:%) anywho. i loved the look, and got really brave and decided to go for it.
