I just set up my 5g. tank for my betta and i put some black sand for the substrte. I have red sand in my 10g. tank and I remember that there was floating sand when i first put it in there too. but i forgot what i did to make the sand stay on the bottom?? what do i do to keep it from rising to the top. I cant turn the filter on until it all sinks or it will suck up sand and ya... thanks

You're supposed to rinse sand before putting it in a tank. This will allow all the smaller particles (dust essentially) to be rinsed away rather than end up in the tank.
If you leave it to just settle then as soon as you turn the filter on it'll get sucked up. I'd suggest either removing it and rinsing it or, gently sweeping above the surface of the sand with a gravel vac to get some of the lighter particles.
If it's been mixed with air bubbles and is floating for that reason you could try gently stirring the sand to break it apart from the bubbles.

Ok thanks and i did rinse the sand but im guessing not enough. A little bit ago I ran my fingers through the sand and a lot of it floated to the top again. I did have a air stone on there for a few days- could that have mad the sand float? its not in there anymore.

Yes I'd think the airstone would help make matters worse. Is the sand floating by itself or is it attached to little air bubbles? If the latters the case then yes running your hands or the stick end of a fish net will help....

We all think we rinse the sand well enough....then get it into the tank and decide that maybe another 45 minutes would have been better :%).

Yes- the pieces of sand are stuck to little air bubbles- so its from the air stone? Dang it... i knew having that thing on would do no good
