what's wrong with black phantoms?
Plus festivum and gouramis are the same size. I'd rather one of each rather that a pair of just one.

And just for some added info: festivum profile

6 hatchet fish
2 dwarf gourami
2 honey gouramis
2 rams
1 clown pleco
10 black phantoms

With that one, you have too many surface-dwelling fish. The gouramis will surely fight for territory, and I doubt they'll appreciate the hatchets there. Black Phantoms are relatively deep-bodied, so for stocking a big school, smaller tetras or rasboras might be better. Remember, one big school will look better, and the fish will be happier, than 2 smaller ones. How about:

1 clown pleco
2 rams
15 harly rasboras
1 pearl gourami, 2 dwarf gouramis, or 2 honey gouramis

They shade the glow of it with their mossy-misty costumes,
They wear masks of silk, porcelain, brass, and silver,
So as not to mislead with their own, ordinary faces.

I have a 50gal. tank with,

6 corys
6 kuhlis
3 otos
2 balas

balas not recomended since they get to big. I am going to have to get rid of mine. Haven't decided on a schooling fish yet. Had some white clouds (13) but now there in my 20gal. I think 6 cory cats and 2-3 otos with a schooling fish of your choice would be cool, just my opinion.

Actually, I've had the very opposite experience in cichlids. Flaggies tend to be more interspecifically quarrelsome than festivums. True, festies attain a minute level of nippiness during their younger years, but that phase drops off very quickly. Without much company, festivums will become reclusive; as with its biotopical comrade pterophyllum scalare, they do best in large numbers with several species of fish---a 30 gallon display really isn't sufficient for these fish, as with the angels (unless you plan on breeding them).

How about I replace the pearl with a pari/trio of dwarves? That shoulc keep the aggression within the gouramis and not towards the other fish

How about I drop a school of fish?

1 dwarf gourami
2 honey gouramis
1 angelfish
1 festivum
2 rams
1 clown pleco
8-10 black phantoms

And althoughth my tank isn't exactly a tank of sharks, I don't think they are wimps either. How about I check up on the festivum and monitor their personal aggresion before I pick one for my tank.

And could you post a picture/profile of that fish, Cory? I've never seen it.

Festivums can also be a bit shy and like to have company of their own kind.

Actually, in my experience with them at work, they are usually pretty territorial and aggressive. We have to keep them on the aggressive SA cichlid wall in the store.

Not really a kind of fish I'd want to have for a peaceful 30 gallon community. Might I suggest a Curviceps instead?

I think it would be better to get two of each instead of one and the other, just incase you have an aggressive gourami. I had a festivum at one time, it stayed to itself, until anything tried messing with it. My golden wonder killi got messed up severly and has scars yet, and this was about 3-4 months ago. Just a word of caution.

I really don't want cories. I'd rather another school of tetras.

What if I used my above idea, only replace moonlight with pearl?

You're way over. The gourami alone grows to a good 8"; too large for a 30 gallon tank. Two pairs of microgeophageus species is just looking for trouble. Choose a species and stick with a pair. Angels are too large to keep in 30 gallons with other fish.
