as most of us browse other aquarium forems in the endless search for knowledge i came across a debate on the addition of salt in the freshwater aquarium
Does salt 'prevent' desease if you add 1tbs of salt to 5gal of water with every change of water? and keeping that amount of salt present in the water all the time
what's your opinion?

depends on the fish. clown loaches dont like salt and can't handle it. but fishes that are semi brackish like livebearers can handle salt well. salt is good for some paracite treatments.

but when my buddy gets new fish he adds alot of salt to there water, and they do just fine.

Salt doesn't prevent ANYthing. From it's addition, the osmotic ability of the fish will be enhanced, thus building up a strong slime coat. However, many fish experience detrimental effects of such dosing (especially scaleless fishes), albeit perhaps not noticeable until they die prematurely. I suggest only using salt when your fish actually develop an epidermal disease, such as ich.

As stated salt will not prevent diseases and certainly should not be used for any of the scaleless fish.

I have used it when I had Live Bearers. The quanity I have forgotten but I can assure it was no where that amount.

Some have had success with Salt it treating cetain problems but again not with scaleless fish.
