Hi all. If anyone has experience with mormyrids, fish of the elephantnose family, I'd like some help. I know everything I read says that they prefer low or dimmly lit water. Just what do they mean by that? I mean I know these fish come from a river or a lake in Africa (in fact its the only place to find them) but you can't tell me that the sun doesn't shine there so what gives. And they are sposed to enjoy a heavily planted tank, which is OK with me, but how do you get plants to flourish and grow in low light without it being something like a weed or hideously ugly? The wife went out and got one of these fish, loves it to death (OK, I like it too), but I'd like to benifit from some experience if there's any to be had. Thanks in advance.

By heavily planting the tank you are in fact making it dim on the bottom where these guys hang out.

Click here for examples of what heavily planted means.

Thanks, I know what heavily planted means, btw, was just wondering because my wife won't let me put enough light there to GROW healthy plants. Those are some Awesome tanks, btw a lot of very interesting ideas indeed. See, that's exactly what I thought we should be doing for him. Plan to plant up a bigger tank for him, as he is quite large, mebbe put some loaches in to keep him company at night. just waitin for the taxes to com back

P.S. P1, P4, P8 and P11 are my favs

*sniff* You didn't pick my tank..

Try silk plants. click [link=here]http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=9120&N=2004+113145+4294957032" style="COLOR: #000080[/link]

They have many many more in their catalog for fish, and they will send it to you for free.

Just call them and ask for it.

Silk plants when viewed up close are still noticeably fake, but look a lot more real than plastic ones.

Well, in any event, they're all very nice, interesting tanks, with a lot of hard work and effort by all. A few of them gave me ideas about what to do with the 55 I'm getting for flipper.

I'd really like to get a better look at P3, with the lights on

Hi Divertran,

Would you happen to have the sites where you got info about these fish, I just saw them in a LFS and I've been looking for info but since I've don't have the actual name I haven't had any luck. Here they just sell them as freshwater dolphins, I was actually impressed on the resemblance, but felt a little bit bad for these fellows, they where kind of crammed in one tank.

Any info will be greatly appreciated.
