But the other day i woke up and saw them eating one of my large orandas( about 7 in) his eyes were missing and his blobble head was all messed up and he was dead, so my question is....do you think they were capable of killing a larger fish like that or do you think he might have died of disease and been aten afterwards( he did have a little fin rot or something that i was treating with melafix) What do you think? |

They can easily reach lengths of up to 8 inches. However, I have seen ones in the local herp expo that topped 10 inches. Although they are virtually inactive, ACFs can jump up quickly from the tank bottom and catch a fish. Although they do not look it, they are very dangerous for any fish that it comes in contact it. This is why I don't keep them and why they are illegal in several states. I'm not saying that the culprit was the ACF. I'm just saying that the frog is fully capable of doing the crime. Come to think of it, there is one thing that points to disease. That is the absence of the eyes. When an ACF eats something, it is going to swallow the whole fish. Unlike fish, ACF's don't waste time pecking at eyeballs. Most likely, the fish died from sickness or other means, had it's eyes picked out by the other goldies, and was then scavanged by the ACF. Sooner or later you will have to remove either the fish or the frogs. Goldfish should not even be in the same tank as ACFs because they have different temperature requirements. I'm sorry about your loss. |

My friend bought me two of them at a pet store where she was informed "They stay small and don't hurt fish at all!!" and were sold as ADF's. I couldn't find them in my 75 gallon until the other night I discovered they hang out underneath a rock in a very cramped space. It was then I confirmed they were ACF's and I don't know how I'm going to get them out of that spot until they get bigger. If they are out, they are quick buggers... as soon as I walk up to the tank they retreat. Gotta love these LFS's that don't have a clue what they are doing. ![]() |
