I typed in "Plecostomus" and used Windows Narrator and it came out as "Pleeko-Stom-Us."

Lol It probably is Pleeko-Stoe-Mus sounds like stoma...ahhh who cares! And betta should be ounced beh-tuh which is a FACT. English unciation beh-tuh. Longer words(scientific words) in english though tend to be harder to follow unciation guidelines...... since they also carry unciations from latin/greek and just tend to be a MOUTHFUL.

With scientific names, I tend to ounce "e" like "ay". It just sounds more natural.

I ounce betta like "bay-tah", even though some people insist that it is ounced "bet-tah". Their version sounds like something an ignorant redneck would say, not like Latin.

I also ounce Corydoras leucomelas like "luke-oh-may-las", even though PlanetCatfish says "look-oh-mell-us". When people ounce Latin words like English words, it just sounds weird...

But the Latin unciation of Betta would be beh-tuh - the double t functions the same way in latin as in English, shortening the vowel. The Greek letter Beta I assume you're comparing it to has (in its English transliteration) only one T, allowing the long E sound. The unciation "bet-tuh" is correct in both English and Latin - not that it matters a whole heck of a lot really.

Crip-toe-co-reen?

I've always ounced Betta "Bey-tuh."

For some odd reason I think the pleco might actually be "Pleeko-Stow-Muss." It almost makes sense... if you're drunk... and you're 1... and you're braindead. Okay, not funny.

What makes me laugh about this thread more than anything else is the fact that misunciations is spelled wrong in the title, and in fact, during the course of this entire thread, was only spelled right one time.

Had we have been talking instead of typing, all but one of you would have more than likely misounced it.

Liana - You've hooked me. Doesn't match up with its color? Like what? (This sounds potentially amusing ...)

Is there a unciation guide somewhere? I know how to spell all the names, but sometimes I get confused on how to ounce things I don't keep. This is a funny thread though, I'm enjoying it.

EDIT: I like when people think that the wrong label is on a fish tank b/c the name of it doesnt match up with its color...:%)

yeah many of the scietific names confuse me so I don't even bother with them. I normally just use the common name. I know I shouldn't but it seems almost impossible to remember something like that.

Hmm... corydoras julii... I kept saying that as "julie" until I heard someone ounce it as "Julie-eye." Now I'm confused. *shrugs*

That person is correct. Because of the two 'i's it has, Julii is ounced 'julie-eye'. The same goes for the other scientific names that end with two 'i's .

I just saw an ad in the paper for an Arrooana. I get that it's not an English word and spelling shifts are acceptable, but that's just hysterical.
