But the Latin unciation of Betta would be beh-tuh - the double t functions the same way in latin as in English, shortening the vowel. The Greek letter Beta I assume you're comparing it to has (in its English transliteration) only one T, allowing the long E sound. The unciation "bet-tuh" is correct in both English and Latin - not that it matters a whole heck of a lot really.

How about the ever popular misounciation anglefish?!?!
I've seen many people here say angelfish incorrectly...

ya, whats even more fun is when people can't even name the fish they have in their tanks. "oh i have some big blue ones with stripes and a medium sized white, yellow and black one thats real long. For some reason my little glowing blue and red ones keep disappearing though."

Gourami - "Gwar-mee"

Cichlid - "Chicklid"

Hoplo cat - "Hobo cat"

Bichir - "Bitcher"

I'll think of some more later...

Let me head on over to my LFS (Local Feed or Fish store - they do both ) And pull out the all mighty binder. When I worked there, we had a binder that we wrote all of the misounciations that we heard - some are hilarious. I will get it and put them up - for all of your entertainment (and mind you, these were daily misounciations!)

Cheers!
Allison

There seem to be a number of those in this post who number several thousand in their count. I wonder if they knew all the names when they first started out...I didn't! Maybe those you poke fun at are beginners. What a welcome to the hobby!!!!

This is not about being a beginner... It's about simply looking at a word and at least getting the amount of syllables it has right.

I mean, come on... Anyone who ounces cichlid like "chinchilla" must be complete idiot!

These words are pretty easy to say if you actually look at them. Plus some sites, like PlanetCatfish, have directions on how to prounce the names. It's not as hard as people think at all.

I have a somewhat high post count yet I got my first tank less than a year ago so I'm pretty much a newbie to the hobby. A lot of this is common sense, not years of accumulated knowledge.

post count says more about how much time people spend on here, and how much they'll talk rather than their actual fish keeping abilities. Personaly I've found there are people who might sometimes have all of 50 posts on here and stay for a week, than never realy show up again, that happen to be breeding fish on a large scale with over 20 years experience. On here, what I've come to respect is how many years they've been on FP and kept fish, the fish that they keep and how successfull they are with them, and personal experience talking to them. Even at that, sometimes an oddball fish or situation comes along and the most experienced have no clue what to make of it.

Edit: I agree, anyone who uses the word chinchilla as a refference to any fish (unless there's some strange fish with chinchilla in the name?) must have been dropped on their head a few times as a cichlid... er uh... child.

it never fails to amaze me how far off some people are in their misounciations... some are funny, some just pathetic... i'm sure you guys have heard your fair share too!

here's some off the top of my head:

1. cichlid: - chiclet
- chinchilla
- chichlid

2. plecostomous - pleckotomus
3. gourami: -gourmet
-grammy
-origami
4. "i have some of those zebra tetras"
5. petcetera: -petsetara
-petcriteria

and i love it when you try to politely correct them, (ie: "i have chiclets in my tank" "oh, what type of cichlids are they?" "some of those african chiclets..." oy!

I think im the only one at my LFS to ounce polypterus as polyterus (The second P is silent). I hear tons of differant cichlid ounciations. One thing that always baffles me though is the number of people that point to the sting-rays and say "look at that eel" . I must have heard at least 3 people call them eels.

Gotta agree with Theresa_M... I've only had my tanks since the beginning of the year, yet I have a decent amount of posts. I don't think that means much. *shrugs*

For my part, I am TRYing to get over the habit of saying Chick-lid instead of sick-lid. I don't know WHY I say it that way, I... I ... just do!

Hmm... corydoras julii... I kept saying that as "julie" until I heard someone ounce it as "Julie-eye." Now I'm confused. *shrugs*

Other than that, I'm sure I say a few others incorrectly, but for the most part I can spell them... can you tell I spend more time on FP than TALKING about fish?

You can also compare it to speaking another language. I can read and understand Spanish to some small degree, but I sound absolutely idiotic trying to speak it.

I dunno, I think a lot of it is not truly reading the name through or some words are just difficult for a person to say. I mean... I KNOW how to say aluminum and accompaniment and I can spell them, but my tongue tends to trip over the words. (Picture Nemo trying to say anenome!) It's one of those dumb words.

~Meow. Thus spoke the cat.~

I hadn't ever read that the second p is silent, I only assumed so before because of "pteranodon" is generally ounced without a p sound as well. However, I've been told by a number of people that the second p is indeed ounced, much to my humiliation. :%)

I'll run this by the people who told me that the second p is ounced, but they'll probably just say it's wrong...:%)

Right here, why?

My fave misounciations are the ubiquitous 'chicklet', and one person that I had calling my shop looking for some 'marijuanas' (arowanas)...took me a bit to realise they were not a prank caller.
