hey all.. okay so i got the fishless cycling thing happening.. but stupids me added a tad too much ammonia .. now it is reading at like 8.. is this a bad thing..
yesterday after the 1hr test(was reading around 8) i added amtrite which is like cycle.
i did a 10% water change and there was minimal difference in the readings..
wat should i do.. should i just leave it?.. i have ac amrid media.. should i put that it my filter?

Amtrite is not like cycle. It neutralises ammonia and will most likely give a false reading. Stop using amtrite and dont use any filter media used for ammonia. These products arent necessary if you are fishless cycling as there are no fish that will be harmed by spiking ammonia and nitrite.

Good luck!

I fishless cycled 2 tanks. An ammonia reading above around 6-8 will stall your cycle. Do a 50% water change to get rid of the amtrite and excess ammonia. If things still don't test right then I would do another water change to dilute the amtrite even more. It won't remove ammonia from your water only make it less toxic to fish which doesn't matter because you have no fish. Products like amtrite usually mess up the reading on most ammonia test kits.

Actually, ammonia can even be harmful to the bacteria at high enough concentration, or so my sources I have read state.

If your ammonia or nitrites go too high(usually off the chart) you can sit for weeks or a month and never see a change in numbers. A lot of other people I was talking to had the same thing happen and there's mention of it in one of the fishless cycling articles. It seems to especially happen if your ammonia goes really high before you get much of a nitrite reading or the same with high nitrite and no nitrates yet. That's what I experienced and heard. As to why exactly it happens I really don't know.

Dont add amrid. It will neutralise the ammonia but you will still get a reading, and most likely a false one that is very incorrect. Just wait it out for a couple of days, retest and go from there. If you need more help post back.
