I second the Columbian Tetras! I have 7 and they're large, colorful, and school very tightly. Plus, I keep them with gouramis and cichlids, and they're never nippy.

Without considering your other stock I like giant danios, Odessa barbs, and congo tetras.

Acually, i would try colombian tetras.

They are a nice schooling fish that wolnt get too big, and isnt too small for the gourami.

The clown loaches wolnt outgrow the tank, but the gourami will.

EDIT* they also stay around the middle too.

I have to 2nd the congo tetras. They look beautiful in my 55g, school pretty well, and are near the size of my blue gourami. They spend most of the day swimming in various areas together around mid level. In the morning and evening the males will start displaying for the females and racing around the tank. In pictures they just come out as streaks of irredescent blue and red. However, they do take a little while to reach full size, finnage, and color. Young males and females are often just dull yellow fish. They also show color alot better with some actinic or high kelvin light. If you want a smaller tetra that shows good color in even low light I love the black neon but they may be small enough for a snack. You definitely need to up the cory school. Like tetras they prefer groups of 6 or more.

Here's my set up...

55 gallon tank with penn plax cascade 300 filter

1 giant gourami (about 8" with tail)
1 dwarf gourami
1 female betta
3 emerald cories
3 clown loaches (3" each with tail)
1 dojo loach

Jerry (the giant gourami) can eat guppies and platy's. We tried mollies but they picked on everyone including eachother. We are looking for a midlevel fish that Jerry cant eat. Perferably schooling, but not a necessity.
Thanks!
Steph

Black phantom tetras (I like black)

I'm confused, are you plannning on putting the fish in before or after you move Jerry and his pals? I would suggest after just in case jerry has an appitite for medium sized schooling fish...

Once the big guys have moved to an appropriate sized tank....get some barbs!
Gold barbs are great and active fish...good color...good school/shoalers and won't nip @fins.
Rosy barbs are also good, they tend to get a bit larger 3-5" but a small schoon in a 55 would work. They also are not nippers.

Jerry the giant gourami will have to go as well as the clown loaches. Sorry. BUT you can get one more dwarf gourami, get 3 or 4 more emerald corys, so they are in a school. As for a schooling fish, maybe danios, rasboras or rummy nose tetras !

rainbow fish would do good, but i think your tank is over crowed with the large fish already.

Yes, we are expecting a bigger tank in the future; But for the mean time.....
We actually tried the Black Skirt tetras and they seemed a bit nippy so we took them back. How many more dwarf gourami's would you suggest?? we used to have two, but one of them died. They were pretty tolerant of eachother and each had his own side of the tank, but I'm afraid they'd be constantly picking on eachother with any more than two.
Thanks for the quick reply!
Steph

If I'm not mistaken, Jerry and his clown loach buddies will outgrow the tank in a short amount of time. True Giant gouramis can grow over 1 ft. and up to 2 ft. in the wild. Once you get rid of them, you have room for much more fish. I would suggest more dwarf gouramis and a school of black widow (black skirt) tetras. They are on the larger side and should get along with your fish.

Best of luck
