either 1 male betta, or 2 female bettas. The females may not have the long flowing tales, but are just as nice to watch

This is one FP habit that really bothers me. The person asked about guppies. Now, why are you talking about bettas?
I really think we have to work on this together. The other day, I saw a post about blue rams, and someone started talking to them about caring for loaches. We have to learn how to answer people's questions and not make up new stocking lists that have nothing to do with what that person wants.

Now, in order not to be a hipicrit, I will answer the origional question:
Guppys are ok, but not the best choice. As previously mentioned, bettas are better. However, you should get whichever you want. I do suggest, though, that you buy feeders instead of the fancy ones. They're much smaller, so they will live happier in a 2.5. Plus, someone is going to buy the fancy ones eventually. The feeders would much rather an overstocked tank than an oscar. And, they will color up if you take good care of them. (see the endlers post)

because, here as the last sentance says:

Looks like they want small fish and that she likes guppies. Nothing at all said Guppy question only and so I made the suggetion because I know how puzzling and curious bettas are. so if I read that wrong, please tell me the rules on how to read

but sk8, sorry bout that mess with my suggetions, but either options are all up to her, just make sure she enjoys what she gets.

I'm sorry, I over reachted a bit. It's just that I've seen alot of stuff like what I was talking about lately. Somebody starts a thread about what aftrican chichlids he can have in a 30 gallon and somebody starts suggesting tetras and plecos.

I'd say 2 or 3 guppys would be fine, if ALL MALE, NO FEMALES.
And be sure not to overfeed, a tiny pinch per day.

I get djtj's point though some people on here who will remain nameless recommend bettas, barbs , or cories irrelevant of the subject and it is a bit tiresome, Im huge on rainbowfish, but Ive only recommended them once when someone wanted a medium size peaceful midwater fish- logic that is! Its probably a good idea to try and recommend fish that suit peoples needs and preferences rather than just pushing our favourite fish species on them.

Some people find bettas a bit like beginner fish unless you start looking at the larger species away from dwarf gouramies and fighting fish, most aquarium barbs can be a bit samey unless youre getting into the more unusual shaped , like denisonis and larger species away from the usual tiger barbs, and cories are a matter for personal taste as some people find them a bit ugly, personally I like them, but not everyone does. The betta arguement was valid in this case as they are suitable for small aquaria , but if its guppies they want its guppies we should help them with. Im not knocking people for their personal preferences , but it takes all kinds. I keep over 30 species of fish, id be bored witless with just one or two.

Point being that for any given size of tank a person has there must be a dozen to perhaps several hundred species we could recommend, and though obviously we must conscientiously limit our recommendations to easy to keep fish for beginnners, it would be a shame if everyone came away from this site thinking that we only recommend fighting fish, a few cories, and barbs.Weve all been watching it happen, day after day, for months.

And yes djtj does dive in on occasion, and frankly , I love watching it!

I wouldn't have a problem with two females and a male, as they tend to eat their own young anyway.

I'd go with show type fish, they are smaller built IME.

What about Endlers? Far better zippy and rarer and mighty colourful

Leave the bettas for the betta lovers We'll have em all!
