I have a 2" convict cichlid female who is by herself and trying to eat all the guppy fry I have from another tank. The problem is that she can't keep up with those guppies!

Can someone suggest a tank mate(s) for this little girl that can help with eating guppy fry. I was thinking some other cichlid, a paradise fish, a krib or even some large danios.

thanks!
Tim

What size is the tank? If you have room, I would suggest another female convict. I wouldn't get a male, because a pair of convicts is even more prolific than guppies.

Get a couple of female bettas and toss them in the tank with the guppies, it took care of leslie's problem

It's an established 10 gallon quarantine tank for now. She'll go into a 20 or 30 when she's been QT'd for a month. I'd like bettas but I thought their metabolisms were too slow to make much of a dent in the guppy numbers.

thanks for the replies!

Well, I don't know about their metabolism, but three betta babes ate all the fry, acquired a taste for fresh meat, and then ate the guppies. Only saved one rather battered male. :#(

Would the convict get along ok with the betta? And is a male betta ok instead of a female?

How about a couple of rainbow fish? Or a krib?

thanks everyone!

why breed if u are killing the guppy fry? i just don't get why people do that, but try any cichlid, give the proper tank size.

I'm not breeding them. I'm looking for someone to eat the fry so they don't overpopulate. My convict cichlid is a wonderful fish, but the task seems too big for her, so I'm looking for help.

Get another female Convict & all your fry will vanish, or else give away the Guppy's to other fish breeders that can raise them.

Danios are quick and a trio will get rid of the fry in no time flat.

Danios are best kept in schools of 6, or at very least four.

I introduced some Giant Danios and the convict attacked them mercilessly I had to put them in my main tank.
I caught all the female guppies and a bunch of fry and they're going to a friend with an empty established tank.

So the problem is solved for now. The danios are settling in and the convict is working her way through the cloud of fry.
