It has nothing to do with your PH. It's from a combination of excess nutrients in the water and too much light. The light IME is from a tank in a room that gets a lot of sunlight.

Having a lot of plants helps keep it under control. you can also just pull the betta out and bleach everything. Just make sure you rinse it very well when done.

I am having this same problem in my gallon tank... I was going to bleach the tank and ornaments. My question would be can I stick the fish and the water from the tank in a big plastic storage container for maybe two days while I treat the tank. I was thinking of also hooking one of the filters on the side of the contaciner... Do I need to put the heater in there as well???? FYI I have a small community tank with 4 german blue rams and some cardinal tetras and rummy nose tetras.. These are the fish that will need to be placed in the storage container.. any help will be appreciated... Oh and just for my knowledge what is this stuff called..

It's called hair Algae. I would do the bleach thing as a last resort in a large tank.

Try blacking out the tank for a few days first. Your fish will be fine in the dark for 3 or 4 days easy.

thanks for the help.. Let me ask more. Should I just turn off the lights. I ask because the tank is in a corner next to the window. The window has mini blinds so it is not real bright but should I cover or just the lights off enough?? Thanks for the suggestion on the light thing... I think I have trained the girlfriends kids not to overfeed .... I will try this for the weekend and go from there... Again thanks for the help...
