Look for Liquifry Egglayer Fry Food. That should provide him with enough nourishment until he gets old enough to eat newly hatched Brine Shrimp ...

Today I harvested some of my first vinegar eel culture and he seems to really like them. At least now I have a variety of foods for him

He is definately getting larger

You could go get one of the breeding nets they run $3.50 around here, and I'd happily give you mine, the foolish female betta I had in it has bailed out and into the tank with everyone else

That or it dawned on me, why not set up a siphoning type water change for it? take bowl of water out of the tank, and some airline tubing and siphone into the cup, and again some more tubing and siphone from the container into the tank? I did changes like that a few times for fry, and it seems to cause less stress on the fry in question

Also try getting a BBS setup, PetSmart has them for less than $10 that works fairly well

I have to agree get it some java moss or something that might catch a bit of food for the day time snacky times...

I think this was already suggested by someone, but...

Why not get one of those plastic breeding tanks sold for live-bearers? They float on the water and allow water to pass from and to the tank, eliminating the need for water changes for that small fish.

And please keep us posted.

The acara and GT haven't spawned since I rescued him, another reason I'd like him to survive. That was April 30, so that puts him at ~1 month old.

He's slowly getting bigger, still on a diet of egg yolk and a mix of flake I have crushed for him. He's nervous about water changes but quite a brat when I try to take pics

The container is starting to get some algae...would adding a small MTS would be a good idea or not?

Because of his nervousness I try to do water changes quickly so I know I'm not getting everything out that I should. Would moving him to another container and doing a 100% change be a good idea (similar to a betta setup?)

These were the best shots I could get today. It's interesting because he's losing the markings that I thought he'd inherited from his parents and keep.

He does look a little bigger, and the container looks VERY clean, which is awesome. Having a very clean tank home will definitley help him mature.

Continuing with the egg yolk feedings and he seems to be getting a bit larger...

I honestly don't know anything about what the cross would be like fully grown. This whole thing was actually an accident. My blue acara laid eggs without a mate; she's quite a nice fish I've had a while so I went to buy a male. Lfs said they had one but it just didn't look 'right' to me, 'oh yeah, it's definitely an acara'. Well no, turned out to be the GT. I decided to keep him anyhow, very nice looking fish and I had the room. So the two of them hooked up anyhow In breeding colors they look absolutely fantastic!

Another lfs often sells cichlid hybrids; they do label them as such and give warnings about potential sterility, etc. They were an option in case I did end up with a bunch but as I said the tankmates are taking care of that.

I've slowly raised the tank temp and continue the egg yolk feedings. He looks to be growing a bit and actually seems to look forward to the feedings where in the past he just hid in the gravel.

Right now he looks grey with black speckles. If all goes well it will be intersting to see what he ends up looking like.

Definitley raise the temperature, just do it very slowly (try 1° at a time, i would say up to 80&#176 , your platy fry will not mind at all. Your platy fry will also enjoy the egg yolk. Does anybody have pictures of a grown up cross of these fish? Are they sterile?

The container is floating in a tank with a water temp of 77° I can raise the temp, but would that be ok for the platy fry that are in the actual tank? My other option is to move the container to another tank.

I added the java moss and gave him another egg yolk feeding.

Lots of fuss for such a small fish

My blue acara and GT continue to spawn. Each time I wanted to save at least one but haven't been able to because of them being eaten by tankmates.

Yesterday the latest group was down to a dozen or so and I managed to get two. I put them in a small plastic container with tank water, a bit of gravel, and a small piece of hornwort; the bowl is floating in my 6g. A few hours later one of them was dead

This morning I was surprised to see the other is still alive. What can I do to increase its chances of survival? Is the setup I'm using ok? It's very small, maybe 4mm so I'm feeding it Hikari First bites.

Any help would be appreciated

I thought she said they were in a small plastic container without a heater? Regardless, though, as 77 isn't nrealy warm enough for CA cichlid fry.

Try feeding Microworms or Live Brine Shrimp.

They are not without a heater though

I have raised angel fry without a heater, and they were markedly smaller than post heater introduction. Temperature plays a BIG role in early stages of development.

Thank you sooo much for the help! I really want to give him the best chance possible since he's the only one and the parents have decided not to spawn again

I do have some java moss, I'll add that later today. And I just fed him a bit of egg yolk. I think it'll be easier to determine if he's eating with that than the First Bites which tend to disappear into the water.

My advice is to definately not move him since he seems to be doing well. Have you any sources for java moss? Just maybe needs something else to nibble on during the day.

I also feed fry crushed egg yolks 4-6 times daily until one-half inch. It only takes a little, as in very very little amount.

You'll see what I mean first time you try it

He will be permanently smaller if you keep him at the temperatures you are holding him in.

The temp of the tank his container is floating in is 77° Does he need higher than that?

try feeding him a bit of boiled egg yolk

I'll definitely try that. Mess doesn't concern me because of the daily water changes. Thanks for the suggestion.
