thanks GandB. Thats some advise i'd prefer to hear instead of 'take them back'. hehe! I wanted a dojo loach before i decided to get the golden loaches but i couldn't find them any where!

As far as your Fantails go, the color change is a natural occurence. I keep fantails(for over 2 years now), I too noticed stripes and color alterations that weren't there when they were younger. Nothing wrong with your fish, as far as that is concerned. I have kept Golden Suckers with my Goldies before; when they suck on the slime coats of other fish it usually means that they are still hungry. Try giving them some algae wafers at night(the goldies may try to eat them if they see them), also try giving them cucumber or zuchini slices. I still keep a dojo loach with them now, as well as a Raphael Catfish and Cories.

I keep my tank temperature at 74F.

I like mine a lot too...but i have to give him back..i don't want to loose any fish because i like that fish a lot...
The only good thing about CAE is that they are really good algea eaters.

hello! Maybe i will think about taking them back but i like the loaches a lot.

I agree with jason..it's best you give it back to the lfs.
I also have A CAE and as soon as he has cleaned my tank i will take him back to the lfs.The CAE get very large and can be aggressive.

yeh but if it's normal and you've insisted that its a CAE then it's not a problem anymore is it..? I have asked for youre advise and you have given it to me and i have trusted it. thankyou

No it's not normal for fish, but for the CAE's, it's normal. It's up to you about taking back or not.

what about the gaining of black scales on the large fantail? Any ideas? I've heard that it could be down to 'puberty' of the fish but i'm not sure if this is tru or not.

baaah..If i start ghetting problems from them, then maybe i will return them to the shop where i bought them. Untill them i don't really want to take them back because they aren't causing any problems.

I'm new

I have a 50" x 12" tank containing 3 goldfish, 1 black moor, 1 butterfly fantail, one large fantail, 3 golden loaches and 6 white cloud mountain minnows.

The minnows and the loaches are tropical, but can stand cooler water and my tank is at 25-26 degrees C, so it's fine.

I've heard that you're not supposed to keep big fish with small fish, but my large fantail ( which is about 5" is fine with the minnows.

I've also heard that you're not supposed to keep fantails with goldfish, but all my fish get along fine.

The one problem i've got with the fish getting along, is the 3 loaches always seem to try and suck onto the other fish. Is this normal?

Another thing that i've noticed is that the large fantail (who's orange and black) has gained more black scales. Is this normal?

One of my goldfish has also gained black streaks on two or his fins.

They are not chinese algae eaters. They are golden sucking loaches. And, on some websites i have looked at they say that they only grow to 10cm long on average. I wouldn't call that large.

Chinese Algae Eaters (CAE) get pretty big & quite aggressive when fully grown. They also suck on the fish, for their slime & i think it's better to take them back at your Local Fish Shop (LFS) & get some credit for them.

So why is it called a loach? Whats the difference between an algae eater and a loach? When i was younger i kept goldfish and weather loaches. weather loaches done exactly the same as the golden sucking loaches.
