i have a 55 gallon tank, and i am wondering how much aquarium salt to add for maintenance. The box says 1 rounded tablespoon per 5 gallons??? that sounds like a little much?

I wouldn't put any salt in.

In freshwater, the only thing salt is good for is saltwater dips (meant for ridding fish of external parasites). When used merely as a tonic in small doses, it has not been proven to successfully prevent, treat, or cure any diseases. Many fish, such as the scaleless loaches and catfish, are sensitive to salt content in the water and the salt may hurt them.

Usually, it just ends up causing more trouble than it's worth.

What kind of fish are in the tank? like was said some species like a bit o salt while others cannot tolerate too much. Fish like mollies, or other brackish fish seem to like it, but scaleless fish like loaches, cats and plecos don't seem to care for it at all.

Why are you adding salt? Most fish do not come from water with salt and aren't kept that way in stores. It hasn't been proven to help with anything and is just another thing to keep track of. Also it can be difficult to keep the salt level the same since evaporated water won't take salt with it so you can't just add the same amount everytime. It sounds like another potential problem.
Plecos do not like salt and the fish will probably get burned being placed in a salt bath but I have never used a salt bath so I'm not certain.

Yes, if the fish is strong enough. But don't keep him in the saltwater for more than three minutes (most other fish can go at least five).

thanks cory for posting that reply, Certain fish species that do not have scales like the pleco for example, are more sensitive to salt than others. They are also more sensitive to meds so care must be taken with them also.
