man, i hate to be all consumerist and capitalist about it, but why would you bother?? there are such great brands available, cheap! making your own frozen fresh food i could understand, having kept discus which i feel at times ate better than i did - but i think flake would be a monumental effort for little gain...but if anyone can prove me wrong, please do so!!!

As I understand it flakes are prepared in the following way:
Select all your fresh ingredients, shrimp, fish meal, egg, spirulina, etc, and get some powdered vitamin C.
Mix all ingredients into a fine paste and then spread superflat on wax paper covered sheets.
Place in a food dehydrator until dried, package in zip lock bags and place in fridge or freezer to keep fresh for the longest.
I agree it would be a monumental undertaking for little to no gain.
However, doing this to prepare a quality homemade frozen entree would be a worthwhile and cheap investment, as well as healthier for your fish.
Get all your ingredients together, mix until just small peices (size depending on what type of fish you have) in a food processor or blender, or chop by hand. Add some pure gelating powder to it and then spread on sheets at desired thickness. Freeze partially, then cut into bite size or larger cubes, wrap in saran wrap or wax paper and freeze.

how the heck do you make flakes?

I have to admit when I read the heading my immediate response was "why the heck would you want to?"

I would say go for the frozen food option as you will retain a lot more of the goodness for a lot less work.

I needed a garlic food for some fish that I was treating for parasites, didnt have time to get to the LFS that evening. So I mixed a small ammount of bottled water with garlic and fish food, mashed real well then let it dry flat....once it dried it was easily crumbled. Similar to Sneaky_Petes process but the cheap version....and easily done @the office as well I might add .

OK I too read the topic, and truly had to wonder...it is an interesting idea not that I would do it...but the first thing that actually came to mind was what kind of flakes, and food flakes was not on the list my thoughts were snowflakes, and flakey people like myself. As to answering the latter of the two...Combine 1 adult in a classroom with 25 over active children (choose an age, the younger ages work best for me) and try to force them all to focus on the lsson at hand. Keep in mind your total number of childer is at least 25. At least 5 should be on or need to be on ADD/ADHD meds. 3 are having a very bad day, ie woke up late, no breakfast, etc. 2 could be very successful if it weren't for their attitudes. 5-7 that have a language barrier. 3-4 that have some sort of learning disability. 10-15 need or wear glass, have hearing problems, etc. 15-20 of them are what is considered low socio-economic (Yes, some children fit in one or more of these categories, you might just get lucky and have a couple that fit into all of the above:%)) Then just for giggles let's be sure that in the middle of the school year (February sounds good to me) that they are ready to take a test that is considered an end of the year test, and all of your students, yes, 100% must pass...this is how to make a person a total Flake!!!

Cheers ya'll say a prayer, wish us luck, what ever you wish to do positively, tomorrow is our day! Heidi:%)
