a got a pair, and i love them already

they're only about 3 inches long. they're eating fairly well too. So far i've seen them eat bloodworms, brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, sinking pellets and glass worms. i have them in a 29 gallon grow-out tank. this is my first time with Bichirs so any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated.

They will need HUGE ammounts of space to roam in because they do end up being intolerant to each other.

...no, not the senegals.

from what i've read, they're one of the more peaceful varieties and they don't tend to grow as big as Ornates or other bichirs.

moving this to aquarium oddities.

I have yet to experience aggression or territorial behavior out of any of my 6 bichirs and that includes 2 senegals. however, one of my senegals is an albino and the tank they're in is a 150. if you wind up with 2 males of the same species (as is the case here) they may become territorial with each other. I'm not sure I'd go so far as to say they'd be intolerant of each other though. personally I'd look to eventually have them in a 75 gallon. they will get to around a foot long and are one of the more active species of bichirs.

Even in a 40, 2-4 senegals will rarely, if ever, show any conspecific aggression. Lots of water changes and lots of quality foods (frozens, fresh, and live) will have your bichirs at 7" by the first day of spring. Keep the top covered and give your fish places to hide.
