Good for you. Take the female out as he could turn on her now. Don't feed the male. He won't want to eat anyway, and he can last 7 days without eating. Feeding him now will destroy his nest and pollute the water. Take him out when the eggs become fry free swimming. Good Luck.

thanx! i took her out ands put her with her 2 sisters in a 10 gallon, well, how can i tell if they are fertile? u cant see sperm when they spawn in that normal? he is a great father, NEVER leaves the nest, NEVER lets anything fall more than a few centimeters if he can help it, and before i read this i had her back in her 1 gallon that i had in the 10, i let her out for a minuet and he never left the nest, he just circled the nest and flaired, so i took her out and put her in another 10 after she ate the food that had fallen to the bottom (she is my little garbage disposal) and when i put her into the 10, she had been holding onto an egg in her mouth and when i put her in, well she spit it out

After awhile your eggs will begin to develop tails
They will drop and daddy will pick them back up and spit them back into the nest. Don't be too upset if he eats a few. Thats nature. He may realize that some are no good. The mummy probably will either spit the egg out or eat it.
When you can see the eyes of the baby's, then take daddy out and feed him. At the moment they are eggs, then they be eggs with tails, with their heads still in the egg which they are feeding on, then they loose the egg and becme free swimming fry. All this time be careful not to feed and pollute the water, and don't let any drafts of cold air in, as baby's get Velvet real easy and can die.
Good Luck **Tiger

THEY HATCHED

i counted about 50 and he is a great father, and he seems anoyed when a few semi-strong fry try and swim from the nest the first one hatched a little before 3 in the morn, then i stayed up till 5 to make sure they were fine. it 10:30 am now and i know he is tired, he doesnt make as many trips to the bottom of the tank to retreve some that fell, sometimes when his mouth is full he will have them land on his head or back and sort of toss the fry up they are sooo tiny but i can even now tell they have grown slightly, what kind of conditions do i need to have to get mostly females? in my betta book it only tells how to get males, and when i get the 100 gallon i want lots a female bettas in therei was wondering how nutritious is planaria for the fry? i have plenty of new borns lately (i try and breed them) and they are so tiny u can barley see them, so i figured they would be able to eat them, and can i squeeze the mico stuff from the tubifex worm block? it seems plenty small too i was planning on brineshrimp, but well i can figure out where i left the little packets

Congrats!
Well some people may say that certain factors will creat more of one sex, but from my experience it doesn't really matter. I've talked to a bunch of other breeders as well and they to beleive there isn't really anything you can do about it.

I've never feed that so i can't help ya there. Baby brine shrimp is the best food for fry, so i would run back out to the store if i were you- you have time cus they don't need to be feed untill they are free swimming and they will be fine for a day or 2 after that as well. Try to stay away from non-live foods, cus fry need movement to stimulate feeding, plus its real easy to pollute the tank

good luck!

for the last week i began shopping around for new bettas, and on my hunt i found a metalic red/black butterfly to replace the previece dark red male with black fins who died (the previese one was MUCH nicer) and i found a little steel blue female, i found a beautiful bigger girl whos body is light pink and whose fins are pink/red with just the perfect amount of blue wash, and i found the perfect mate for her too!! his fins are red when he is excited, and he too has a pinkish body, his tail is in a tear drop shape (hence his name*teardrop*) and he flairs very nicely, so i decided to breed them!

well, i started them out in an old 10 gallon, which go very dirty very quickly

so i took a trip to my LCS and i picked up a new one well they are all settled in, i used a 1 gallon betta tank for the female to give her enough swimming room, and i used a piece of styrofoam for the nesting spot (although i wasnt completely convinced he would use it) and now its the day after i moved them to the clean 10 gallon, and they are doing great.

i let her out to see his reaction (net ready of coarse to break up anything) and they both started flaring at eachother (girls look so funny when they flair) and there wasnt any chaseing, no nipping, and she went right over to check out the nest, she also even took a blood worm from the corner of it i left them in there for probly 3 min, before i had to walk away, so i put her back in the 1 gallon. i came back like 2 min later and he had already made his nest bigger,, so i moved her tank from the other side of the tank, like 6in or so in front of where the nest had extended from the styrofoam....(checks on them again)it is still thin (maybe like 2/3 bubbles thick in some places) but i am very confident in these 2, i had tryed breeding like 5 times before, and i had 2 spawns, but the first time i dident know they had spawned and i was mad at the male for ruining she devils fins (rip and i put the nest in his vase, after slipping a piece of slate under it, that night i saw him picking up little things and trying to put them back, then i felt like a fool he had kept trying to put them back, but he must have been mad too, because he never tryed to rebuild the nest at all the second time they spawned they had done it after a major water change in a comunity 10 in the basement and it was before school, so i got to watch them for a few minutes but he destroyed the nest

now under controlled conditions, im hopeing i can get it right, and they will not be allowd to spawn for about 11 days ( i have a week off of school and i want to be there)

so, any advice? critisism? anything i could do better lay it on!!

Thats great news. You're doing well. Frozen baby brineshrimp is what I feed my frys. As its in a block frozen in water, as it defrosts the shrimp is left all through the water and it is so tiny.
I can not help you there with the breeding of just females.
I see if I can find someone that can.
Just watch out for the daddy now. Once he no longer picks up the eggs, and so no longer needs the nest, then its best to remove him, as he will be pretty hungry by now and little fry could be on his menu.
As soon as they become free swimming fry, you need to feed them at least 3-4 times per day. So you need to get that food asap. Also because you are feeding them alot, some food will not be eaten, so regular water changes are a go.
Just be careful that the temperature of the water is the same when doing water changing, you do not want them getting cold. Good Luck **Tiger

OK, Her name is Callatya, she may help you with the breeding side of things. She is a moderator on this FP. Try sending her a pm and she may be able to help. **Tiger

RE focus try talking to KEITHGH[a href="mailto:keithghh@msn.com"]keithghh@msn.com[/a] he is pretty good at this sort of thing.
I never heard of planaria, but Callatya might be able to help you their as well.
When I put in my frozen baby brine, I swell it around a little bit with my finger. Very gently so not to hurt the babys. This acts as through the shrimp is alive, and the babys get use to my finger and not become afraid.
Great job you are doing. Great photos too.

im going to see if my teacher can help, we are going to work on it tomorrow and when i left this morn for school, i saw 1 fry whom is almost free swimming se skimms along the top like a normal fish, then he gets tired and either rests on the surface, or he will float to the bottom, and he is amongst a few loaners who have journyed accross to the other side of the 10 gallon, funny how the male doesnt notice but i guess he has his fins full so to say i offered him a pellit, and he completely snubbed it, but he has been eating the dead fry that wouldent stick to the nest, or that had been dead for some time, im guessing tomorrow they fry should be free swimming? i have another 10 gallon all set up and ready for him, and i printed out a betta genetics page (11 pages long) and what colors would u call my 2?
