BARBS

The smaller ones such as gold barbs and tiger barbs as well as the slightly larger rosy barb love the swimming room offered by the longer 30 gallon tank.

Of course corys like the space too . A 30 is good for one or two schools of any of the smaller schooling fish, I'd stay away from any fish that gets larger than 6" though.

Barbs are nice ,tough, fish but can be nippy, so if you wanted some variety in the tank they are not always the best choices to start with as it will limit the other kinds of fish you can keep. Theres loads of small tetras and stuff you could try.

If you're gona do a fishtank do it the right way - a biotope
I'm feeling, Asian? Some cherry barbs (smaller and more mild mannered than their larger cousins) some glass catfish, maybe some "wild" bettas. Loaches anyone?

I know they're considered beginer fish, but mollys and platys give you a lot of color and movement for your buck.

I'd complement them with a group of corys as well.

In my 30 I have 3 platies (very cute 1 male sunburst and two female mickey mouse) and a school of 6 cherry barbs---very peaceful in the barb family. I'm going to add a school of black rasboras (gorgeous dark purple & orange) and maybe a dwarf gourami or two to round out the tank. All these are very colorful and lively. I'm temporarily housing my 5" pleco in there---just until I get my 55 up and cycled, then I will move him out and add an oto or two for clean-up. These fish worky well for me!!

A biotope is a tank with all the fish and possibly all the plants, types of rocks, types of driftwood, etc. from one place on the globe. IE an Amazon biotope would have angelfish, neon tetras, and plecos. But it would not have kribs, yo yo loaches, cherry barbs, or glass catfish, even though they are compatiable agression wise.

IMO, I think it's cooler having an aquarium that is actually meant to look like something rather than throwing together fish species that would never interact in nature.

I love the biotope idea, but a lot of it depends on what fish are available to you at your LFS, unless you want to pay truck loads of shipping by ordering specific fish online. I would have loved to stay natural and done a biotope, but I don't have crap for fish where I am. I only have one fish store in my town that I trust to put their fish in my tank, so I buy what colorful fish they have that will work in my tank.

Really? I found it easy to do a biotope. The only problem is the self control in not being able certain fish you want because they're from different parts of the globe.
IE. my SA blackwater river biotope:
4 apistogramma agazzi
8 neon tetras
8 marbled hatchets

I had to get neons because I couldn't have the cherry barbs I wanted. But other than that, It's not a problem for me.

All LFSs have the ability to special order fish for you. All you have to do is ask.

I'm not your neighbor, you Bakersfield trash.
