bowfinking![]() Hobbyist Posts: 140 Kudos: 37 Votes: 0 Registered: 07-Jan-2002 ![]() | They are very easy to keep, but my experiences with them in a 55 gallon led be to believe that the tank was to small for them. They are fairly large and active characins, closely related to pirahnas, and get to be about 6" long. They are nervous fish, and were constantly banging off the walls of my 55gallon, so I would suggest something even longer for them. Most 6" fish would fit nicely into a 55gallon, but the silver dollars are too active. Since they are nervous fish, place driftwood and rocks into the tank to give them some security, while making sure that they have plenty of open swimming room. No live plants though. Although they are cousins of the pirahnas, they are vegetarian and will unceremoniously eat live plants. It has even been said that they will nibble on the supposedly indestructable and unedible java fern. They are not too be trusted with small fish, however, nor those with long, flowing fins. They also like to be kept in schools. Hope this helps! |
