I wonder Pete do you think that would be ok? i am going plant shopping on tuesday, (Kitten you have no idea what you have started!)and ask in the LFS about getting fish/frogs for the tank. at the moment i am thinking of setting it up on Tuesday properly and letting a couple of guppy fry live there for a few weeks till it is cycled (i ll use "cycle" so i guess it will be i just like to be very careful!)and stable in terms of temp etc.

so come on people Vote!! I haven't quite made my mind up yet...........

I'm not so sure that frog's a boy. Girls tend to have a pointy little "tail" like your's does. But, mostly it depends on the armpits, which I can't see in the picture.

Actually, I know for sure that is the Male as my froggies have bred
the females are very much more pear shaped than that little guy

I would vote for ADFs! They are soooo nice. I have one male betta with two ADFs. They are fun to watch, I even find them fun to handfeed

I agree with Theresa, I think that would be fine as well. Do you know how to tell Males from Females GFG??
When the little frogs lift their front arms forward, if in the "armpit area" they have a large white bump that looks like a pimple, combined with really "knobby" knees, (tons of little bumps on back legs), then you got a male. If the frog is more heart shaped sorta with the majority of the weight in the rear (sounds familiar ), and has only a small armpit bump or no armpit bump, and has relative smooth looking legs, thats a girl!
Would be awesome if you got little froglets kickin around!
Heres a pic of Krimet for you! (hes a boy if it helps, females have larger rear ends

Kitten you have no idea what you have started!

Started? Moi? I didn't intend to start anything! I just intended to help people by compiling a bunch of information that was given out on the site.

It's not my fault!

Disclaimer: I tend to overstock

A common setup is a small tank (2g-ish), unfiltered, with a betta and an ADF.

Ok, so your tank is about 5.5g Cherry barbs aren't huge fish, they get to maybe 2" with the males being a big smaller (at least IME). ADFs are small too, although I really have no idea how much they add to the bioload.

You have a filter, the tank will be planted, and you're willing to do the maintenance...I really see no reason why you couldn't have a pair of cherries and a pair of ADFs. I think that would be fine

Hi people,

I have set up my 4.6 Gallon tank. (8 inches by 16 by 10.)it has a light heater filter(pretty fast but can be slowed down.

I did want to put four ADF's in there, but am really not sure they 'd fit?

I would like a peaceful(ish) single species tank with something to watch. it is to go on my desk. the light will have to be switched on so will be on from 6 till 12 in the evening.

i am happy to do 100% Wc.

******Kitten****** I hope you don't mind but i copied and pasted this list to ask opinions on what people like best/have experience with etc. thanks

4-6 gallon

*1 Male Betta - really not keen had one before and had a dreadful time was so sad when he died.

*1-3 Female Bettas (depending on aggression)- i keep four in a 10G hex

*Male guppies
- have them in main tank

*Endlers
- like that

*Killifish
- Ok

*3-5 ADF's
- have one already wanted it to have friends?

*Pair: Cherry Barbs
- like that

*1-5 Dwarf Puffers
- bit dubious about feeding them snails!

*Paradise fish (possibly, though better off in a ten)
- hmm not sure at all.

*Trio: Some wild type bettas (imbellis, coccina, etc)
- can't get them!

*School: Pygmy cories (possibly with betta or other centerpiece fish)- ok

*WCMM - main tank already

*Bumblebee gobies - love these are hard to get!

*Pair: n. brevis Shellies (5+ gallons, other varieties 10+ gallons) - would love these but can't get them

right I have picked out the possibles in a the poll and would really appreciate some input - what have you had and what worked best? how many of what fish could i fit?

if you think any types i have left out i have misjudged then let me know as well!

i think that is everything.... happy voting

I would go for the froggies!!!
I love ADF's. I have 4 in my 75g, and would love to add more if I had room!
I think you would be really happy with the frogs. I would say try not to go for more than 4 though.
Alternately, you could do something different, if it tickled you, and do a pair of ADF's and a pair of Cherry Barbs!

I really want to do a tank of ADF's so I suggest that. But I would go with 3-4 not 5. It would look a bit cramped to me to have 1 per gallon. Especially if you add in decorations and places for them to hide or swim through. Second choice I'd do killifish. They looked pretty interesting at the lfs. Barbs don't interest me in the first place and I see cherry barbs in everyone's tanks and at every place that sells any fish.

Definitely cherry barbs.

Their red coloration looks spectacular against a bright green, densely planted tank.

After havintg seen pictures of different types of killies, I think they are some of the most beautiful fish around. Don't have any myself, but rarely see them at my lfs.

Cherry barbs

Peaceful, they do well in pairs, and their colors are great, especially the males.

One of my two pairs:

I voted for cherry barbs, for one of the same reasons as Kitten. I would like to try them myself, but unfortunately I don't have any room for them in my tanks. At trio or 4-5 cherry barbs would look very cute in a 5.5 gallon. Just make sure to keep up with the water changes! But I suppose it will be cycled, won't it? I would cycle it artificially, so you don't risk the fishes lives. It is also a lot quicker.

I'm going with cherry barbs, just because I want to try them myself, too. However, I think you could put a pair of cherries in there and maybe a few adf's? I don't think cherries are nippy and I think it would be a fun tank.

Plus, cherries would look SO nice if you're going to plant the tank. (Plugging my Small Tank Plants and Aquascaping article. )

ADF's are great fun if you want to go for a bunch of them. The size of the tank is perfectly fine for four of them, I'd think. It's got a decent footprint for a small tank. (And I'd like to point out that's it's 4.6 UK gallons, it's 5.5 US gallons for all of us who can't convert. )

My sister intends to set up an ADF species tank when she comes back from home after graduation... 12 gallons of froggie goodness.

Of the other choices, I like the killifish and bumblebee gobies... never kept either, unfortunately, but love them both. Killifish could be really colorful and fun, bumblebees are just adorable. They are a bit harder to find here, too, as you pointed out. Actually, the oddest thing is that the only place I've seen bumblebee gobies is one LCPS, another similar store is the only place I've seen dwarf puffers. I'm enthralled by them both.

May I point out that I'm exceedingly pleased that you found inspiration in my article? I had to giggle when I saw this thread. *does a little happy kitty dance*

Oh, and I don't mind in the least that you copied the list... I'm glad you found it useful!

I bet you knew I'd say that though...

You could easily fit 4 - 5 frogs in there. With 50% WC and gravel vaccuming, as well as a good filter (not THAT good though, or they'll drown!). Just make sure they can't get out.
