I am having the some problem, my tank thermometer says 30 (86)also. i haven't switched off the heater tho it is way down on 77.

the water does n't feel very warm i am wondering if the thermometer - its a strip one stuck on the outside of the glass, is wrong?

i have moved the filters so they run water across the top of the tank and create more movement?

I am very worrried about my Bettas though - no filter!?

It doesn't sound like you have air conditioning for your house. Thats how my tanks stay at the right temp. in the summer time. Air conditioning would benifit you and your fish. There are 2 more options that i know of.
1- Buy a chiller. These can be quite expensive though.
2- I have heard of some people using soda bottles with ice in them to cool their tanks. I am not sure about this method though. Someone else might be able to inform you better.

update, we now have 2 fans circulating air in the room but the ambient tempreture is 33c, the water temp is now at 32c.
the 2 other tanks in the lounge are fine but we cant get this one to come down. what tempreture level will the fish tollerate? (plattys and guppys)
we are looking into aircon.

When my tanks get too warm, i put a small fan on the top of the tank to blow across the water surface, that really helps mine, but you do have to have the tank lid open.

What I've done when my a/c went out earlier this year is this:

1. turn off all the lights
2. do small water changes only 5-10% each day, if you have the time do 5% in the morning and 5% in the evening, trying to only drop the temp 1* or so...be sure not to overdrop the temp then you'll have other problems to deal with
3. open the hood of the tank (be careful if you have jumpers you might need to take out more water to keep them safe)
4. put the fans facing the tank
5. add some more airstones, and get more water movement going...

doing this won't be a guarantee to keeping the temps down as summer gets hotter and hotter, but it will help...it is because of the heat and fluctuations that I had to give up keeping fish when living in presidio i just couldn't do it

Best of luck, heidi

I don't have a second one to check (oops ) all my glass ones broke!

so far the fish seem totally fine. I have an illness in the 25G but that started before the heat wave.

I will turn the lights off tomorrow - only make tem come on in the evening and keep the filters pumping across the top of the water level.

good luck to every one else!

I've been in a similar situation, and at least in my experience, the heat has not caused any real problems.

In the summer the tank is permanently some degrees above the usual temp, and I have not had any problems.
If a day is particularly hot, I try to have the lights off as much as I can just in case, but I haven't done anything else.

This is, of course, just my own experience, but I hope it helps.

Good luck

well...hope the room is venting...with those 2 fans blowing...i hope in due time..the temp will go down...as for the heater..if the thermostat is set lower that what ur current temp now..its not goin to turn itself auto coz the water is sitll warm (obviously!!! ) i had an episode of heat wave lately....but i have access to AC..but even then...it took quite some time to lower the water temp by 2c..i left the AC running 24/7 just to keep the water cool enuf...added...i lift the hood and kept it up...and turned off the lights at noon for 2 hrs using the timer...that really helped a lot.
also, as mentioned, changing water regularly does a lot of gud thing as well..but i dont recommned the cold bottle-coz its a spot temp variation in the tank which u dont want...coz..ull end up with another problem... ICH!!!
gudluck
