hey guys, been a while since i posted but i've been lurking. first a lil background. i recently purchased a 55gal tank to give my angel a lil room to stretch out. my 29gal was very heavily planted so i never noticed the fish missing. out of 6 glos and 6 priscilla tetras i have only 2 pris. a few months ago a purchased a small fish labeled "high fin black shark". i know nthat this fish is a catfish as it has whiskers and the long fin underneath. it was around an inch when i purchased it. the tag said that it was nocturnal, ate flake, and would get around 3". thats why i never worried about it or saw it till the transfer. i got all the fish out ex the 3 priscillas (notice i said 3) and as i was going back to the 29 the cat shark thing came up out of the cave and swallowed one. it is now around 6" long and very fat and happy. any ideas on what the fish may be?? i'll probably be taking it back to my lfs and see if the lady that runs it will give me a trade/store credit.

thx
gary

My best guess is that your fish is the Colombian shark, Hexanematichthys seemanni. I think these guys reach around a foot, and need either brackish water or full salt when mature. I'm not super-sure, but someone else will know more.

Anyways, try searching for pictures online, to see if that's your fish.

did a quick search and thats not it, tho it is similar. mine is black on the top half, a light grayish blue on the bottom half, a long thin fin that runs underneath from belly to rear, and a black spot on the back of the large
top fin.

That sounds vaguely like a Channel Catfish, Ictalurus punctatus, though they generally have a good number more spots than you describe. Though instead of getting 3", they get more along the lines of 3'...

im at work so i cant really post a pic, and i haven't been able to find a pic on the net... tho the closest i can come to a description is an id shark with the whiskers and bottom fin like a channel cat. i know thats not much help. its not a redtail shark. if there were a few changes as described, the coloration and different fin placement on top, it would look similiar to this http://www.planetcatfish.com/images/full/auchenipteridae/auchenipterichthys/thoracatus/1.jpg[/font]

...

Tell me, how much did you pay for this fish?

Your description reminds me of a fish that is often somewhat expensive, the Paroon Shark Pangasius sanitwongsei. I didn't think of this fish at first since I have never seen a Paroon Shark in person but they are often sold as High Fin sharks of some sort. This fish is very similar to the Irridescent Shark in that it is an active swimmer. However, unlike the Irridescent it approaches 10' in length. YES. 10 FEET. Among the Pangasiids it is one of the largest species, though unfortunately very few reach Pangasiids actually do reach their beautiful adult sizes.

In any case, if it's not a Paroon it is still probably a close relative. based off of the clues I'm pretty positive it is a Paroon, though, just because of the common name and the apparent similarity to the Irridescent. However, you probably should be relieving yourself of this fish...

PeterIt is oh so true

Do as shinigani suggested, relieve yourself of your baby...that or well get a nice huge tank 500 or so would be a good start or pond outside couple thousand gallons

Now my questionwhy on earth do lfs/lps sell Irridescent Sharks? Why? Had a similar experience this past spring with and lfs selling one to another teacher saying it would go great in her 10 gallon tankyeah right

i have yet to figure out what it is, lol... i dont "think" its a paroon, i only paid like $8 for it. the lady at my lfs is gonna take it off my hands tho. she has a tank with several of the biggest id, albino id, and rainbow sharks i have ever seen, 22years old according to the label on the tank.

it also sounds like a pangasius to me , they are the fish which get sold as hi fin sharks, a rather large catfish which will in time grow very large. the other thing i noticed is that you are rehoming your large angel, it could also have been the angel killing if it was large enough.

I know the breed, but not off the top of my head. It is definitely a territorial fish and a dangerous one to make it simple.I have no expirience with thiis fish.
