We are still undecided about the size of my new tank

I've rather sure I want to do a larger, peaceful SA/CA cichlid setup, but I'm also wondering what other larger peaceful fish are options. The tank would be a minimum 75g, max 125g. This is going to be my last good-sized tank for quite a while so I want to make sure I'm not overlooking any potential fish

to hell with cichlids, too many people have 'em.

Come join me in the minority of fishkeepers that are housing the understated and much more beautiful rainbowfish!! Boesemanis, irian reds, turquoise, maculocci, goyder river, etc etc! These fish all get 3-5 inches long and are much cooler than big cichlids. They do more stuff and they're prettier

Cichlids are a pain, most are too aggressive for a nice tank. Have you considered killifish?

killifish in a big tank seems a bit of a waste; the great thing about them being so small and delicate is that you can keep a few pairs in a 29g.
I'd say ina 125g you'd want some decent sized fish, which means cichlids are good. Rainbow fish, or at least a few o the species, are really beautiful, so why not hae a school of 6 red rainbows for example as dither fish. In a tabnk that size I'd be wanting some nice sizeable cihlids. Things like severum or uaru would be a decnt focal fish, reasonably peaceful, and then a pair each of firemouths, blue acaras and gymnogeophagus balzanii wopuld round it out. Plus a great big pleco and some of the more unusual synodontis.

On teh other hand, if you want something really unusual, try a tank of the bigger labrynth fish, like ctenopomas. They are quite ecil and territorial though. I think as long as you get a few interesting cichlids then the fact that a lot of people do cichlid communities won't be too much of a drawback.

I see Tim has moved from advocating Tiger Barbs to Rainbows ! Good move.

I agree with him fully. I've always wanted a big rainbow tank. Someday...someday.

I have a few Rainbows and they are great fun. Beautiful colors, hardy, peaceful, active and great fun to watch. They are always on the move without being too zippy. Very playful, they are always twirling around one another displaying and dancing but without aggression. Come in a range of sizes from 1 1/2 inch Threadfins to the bigger Irians and Boesmanni's.

Another option for a tank that size is Dennisoni Barbs. Absolutely breathtaking. Incredibly beautiful fish, about 5" but a school of them (they're very tight) is a sight to behold. I saw a planted tank recently with a school of these fish (first time I'd seen them) - I left a big pool of drool all over the poor guys floor. Color wise the closest I've seen to Marine fish.

If you really want to stick to the cichlids, how about a group of Altums or Discus with a few Rams or Apistos (another new favourite) ?
