Turn it off. Leaving it on will cause other problems.

Fish need to sleep too. They'll settle down a few minutes after lights off.

You can get one of moonlight LED thingies to turn on a for while after lights off so they don't go to sudden blackness.

Put your tanks on a timer for the lights, that way its the same everyday. Ive always had my tanks on timers that way i dont forget to turn them on or off.

Most tank require 10-12hrs of lighting per day. I have always used small timers and never a problem.

judz,

Like all the others said, turn it off at night. Just like people, fish would be able to survive (for a while) in an environment where there is always light. But imagine the side effects for you in that situation. It wouldn’t take too long until you go bonkers and your live expectancy would be quite a bit shorter.

Not to mention the effect it might have on algae, I am sure it would love it.

Any reason why you consider keeping the light on?

Hi,
If your tank has live plants in it, then leave the light
on for a 10 hour period. If you have only fish and plastic
plants, then turn the lights on when you want to view them,
say when you get home from work or school until you go to
bed. Timers are a great idea especially if you are busy.
Let them "remember" when to turn on and off.

Frank

judz,

I assume you mean you turned the light off at night and back on in the morning and then you saw the Neon, right?

Anyway, quite a few fish, including the Neons, loose most of their coloring when not exposed to light directly (means could also happen during the day, when hiding somewhere dark). They will regain the coloring though within a few minutes after the lights come back on. That is normal and nothing for you to worry about.

Usually, if you have a light in the room the tank is in, then turn it on a few minutes before turning your aquarium light out. The fish will still have some light and it sort of simulates a sun set rather than going straight from lgihts to dark. After about 30 minutes turn the room light off. That should cut down on the fish "freaking out" when you turn the lights out. It's more of a "hey wait a second where did the lights go?" kind of thing...so gradual makes for less startled fish.
