A fish, especially goldfish, will grow in a 10gal until they are stunt. Then they will stop growing and a vicious, not that easy to spot, cycle begins. The organs are compressed, the fish bone structure is attack as well as it's nervous system. Difformities will occur: twisted or curved spinal cord, disproportinate head, fins..etc.

The fish can survive for quite a while like this but is more e to disease and will die way before it's normal time ( lifespan is reduced significantly ).

Bottom line, not a good thing. If your goldfish stops growing and is less than 1 foot long... ask yourself this question: Is the tank large enough? By that, I mean, if you have a tank that is 30" large x 12" long x whatever height, if your fish has a hard time turning the corner, you have a problem. Goldfish are large fish and come from the carp family. They grow fast and eat alot. They are messy but the most friendly critters around. You can actually train a goldfish to eat out of your hand. You can also do that with other fish.

A good rule of thumb is the following : 20gal for the first goldfish + 10gal per each additional ones. So 5 goldies should not go into less than 60gal. Believe me, it's worth it. You get a much happier fish, beautiful color and super fast growth.

CC
PS : Please don't mix fantails with other goldfish (Koi, comets) Choose what you like : fast or slow swimmers and stick with that... or choose both and have 2 tanks!

A fishes size is limited by unfavorable conditions. If you keep a goldfish in a 10 gallon tank, eventually the fish will become so large that the water quality will decline significantly. The fish will then spend all of its energy fighting off the negative effects of the poor water quality and not any of it to grow, and it will then become "stunted". Stunted fishes' lifespans are generally only a fraction of the length of a healthy fish, and they often bear gross deformities such as bent spines, oversized heads, and open ulcers/callusses from rubbing against its surroundings.

If however, you keep a goldfish in a 10 gallon tank but have it extremely strong filtration (something like 10000 gph), then it will continue growing because the water quality will be acceptable. It will grow to full size, about 13" for a common goldfish, though it will exhibit injuries from being kept in such cramped quarters. It wold probably have diminished muscle mass from not being able to swim, as well as callusses from rubbing against the sides of the tank.

Goldfish should never be kept in 10 gallon tanks long term, because even if you keep the water quality excellent (which will eventually become nearly impossible), the fish will still become unhealthy and have a shortened lifespan.

I dont keep a goldfish in a 10g i dont have one.

Addict Cory
So you are saying that the gold will still grow in a 10g right but will have problems because if thats what you mean i agree with and that a goldfish shouldnt be in a 10g tank my bf still believes that it will only grow to it surroundings well that might be true too but there will be problems with the fish like you and the other posted, I have seen goldfish before that were deformed and such not a pretty site.

If water quality is kept high(very unlikely and difficult) the fish could keep growing but it will not grow right. Fish end up with things like odd bends in their spine or uneven growth in various body parts. Along with other things cory addict mentioned in the 2nd part of the above post.

Just wondering.......

Why shouldn't you keep fan tails with normal goldfish?

It's possible, especially with fantails, but some of the facier varieties of goldfish will be outcompeted by the more agile common goldfish.
