| lowes pea gravel | |
cjp![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Hobbyist Posts: 145 Kudos: 43 Votes: 0 Registered: 22-Jan-2001 | Has anyone tried pea gravel bought from lowes?Looking at the bag it said it may contain silica dust,which is harmful to breath.But is it safe for fish?I'm putting it in a 75gal.tank,so I'll need two bags or around 100 pounds.If not I'll have to buy gravel and pay 3 or 4 times the cost.Any thoughts anyone? |

Taht is the same with sandbox sand and stuff like that. IF you clean it extremely and I mean extremely well they shoudl be okay. A friend of mine did that and got tired of cleaning it towards the end and killed almost all of the Frontosa that was in that tank. By the way that tank was a 75 gallon tank. That is a lot of sand and a lot of fish, oh yea nad A LOT of money! You jsut need to be very careful with it. Christina |

cjp![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Hobbyist Posts: 145 Kudos: 43 Votes: 0 Registered: 22-Jan-2001 | Looks like another trip to walmart.I'm going to play it safe and buy 75 pounds,and use 20 pounds of gravel from my 10gal to seed the new gravel.With all my rocks and driftwood from a tank that has been running for a few years,I should have it cycled in a short time.Will have to run daily tests on the water.Will cycle it with 6 whiteclouds and 2 rosybarbs. |

Don't know if it's still available anywheres, but you might try some of your garden supply stores or your landscape company's (those specializing in rocks of various materials may have it). fishyhelper288![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Fish Guru Posts: 2161 Kudos: 1951 Votes: 137 Registered: 29-Feb-2004 | i bought the pool filter sand from walmart and i love it, only a quick rinse and no other problems although i did hate that "pea gravel" from walamrt, simply too sharp and point for my taiste im not even suree my fish liked going from nice soft sand to sharp gravel anyway also hard to clean, im not surei will ever go back to gravel, too hard to keep clean![]() all the gunk stays on top of the sand, and all you have to do is hover first, then sink the vacume to get the tiny particals ![]() |

im not even suree my fish liked going from nice soft sand to sharp gravel anyway
also hard to clean, im not surei will ever go back to gravel, too hard to keep clean
