A few species have external color differences between the sexes, but they are not widespread enough to assume that this is the case much of the time. There are a couple of other indicators of sex in some species, but generally the size of a mature fish will reveal its gender. And when he gets to Heaven, to Saint Peter he will tell: "One more Marine reporting, Sir! I've served my time in Hell."
