One of my BALAS broke the thermometer that stuck to the inside glass by way of a suction cup (I am sure you all know the type I am refering to). Anyway,I was wondering if all those little black wieghts in the thermometer will effect the well being of the fish?

That is one reason I always let my thermomenter float. I could be wrong but I think they could be lead. I would try to remove as many as possible. Also remember they often tie plants down with a lead weight.

Just a extra note my SS actually knocked the thermomenter out of the water it was just sitting resting against the glass top. The same SS often jumps out of the tank he/she is very spooky.

I think they might well be steel, run a magnet over the gravel

IMO, it's better to try to remove all the Thermometer parts that are left in the tank.

Sorry, I've been away for awhile. I removed all of the glass I could find, I believe I got all of it. The magnet sounds like it would be worth a try, if there lead then I will use a small fish net to remove it. What is Mormyridae?

A Mormyrid is a member of the Elephantnose family, a group of weakly electric fish that are sensitive to metal and ambient electric signals.

Lead plant weights are safe to use in aquariums, as the lead does not dissolve in water. I use them all the time (both at home and a work) and I have not had any problems with them.

"lead" plant weights aren't lead anymore, by the way. They haven't been for ages now.

I actually saw some lead weights being used this week.

I dont buy many rooted plants, but I was looking around for my new tank plants when I saw the weights on one plant.

So my fish should be safe. I just have to deal with some little black balls in the back corner of the tank for awhile. When I put plants into my tank I remove the weights anyway so I would not know the long term effects. Thanks for the replys.
