you can euthenize them. I take a disposable plastic cup, put some tank water in it and add oil of clove which you can get at the drug store (look for it in the dental section, I think the stuff I have used is called "Toothache" ) mix it well, then I net the fish, put it in the cup. the clove oil will knock out the fish, then put it in the freezer. There are other ways to do it but this is the one I use.

If the fish is dying of illness,or fatal injury and all attempts to save it have failed- then I use the above method- clove oil. If its dying of old age- I just keep it comfy till it passes.

clove oil is an anestetic ( sp?) so its painless.

If a fish is dying its' best to remove it to a hospital tank and treat or euthanize. If you allow the sick fish to be consumed by healthy fish you run the risk of your other fish becoming ill as well.
After euthanizing, and or removing passed on fish I always plant them under a shrub in the garden or in plants around the office. Flushing runs the risk of a clog.

I know I'm gonna get it for this, but for a fast way of dealing with fry that need to be culled, a blender does the job.

I find that quickly decapitating the dying fish is the most practical and fastest way.

It can be done very quickly and easily, as opposed to most of the chemical means where you have to freeze the fish afterwards to make sure it is dead.

At work, I like the decapitation method because it leaves the bodies intact and non-toxic, so I can feed the decapitated fish to sea anenomes, crabs, or other animals that will not get sick from eating the diseased fish.

if you have dogs, dont bury your fish, or bury them deep.. my dog dug up some dead fish awhile back and it took about 5 baths to get the smell out!
