I would have to agree with Miss Moppet. I don't like to see any fish altered by dyeing or intentionally bred with deformities that causes them suffering. I don't care for albino fish somewhat for that reason and also because they just look kind of sickly. I guess it is because when fish die they lose their color, and so an albino fish looks kind of dead to me.

Hybrids and anything dyed, I also have a strong dislike for some of the more deformed goldfish....bubble eyes, celestial eyes, etc. Anything that is deformed and suffers a poor quality of life because of it. Come on, there are tons of beautiful, natural fish out there. Why create deformed abominations?

It's not so much that I hate the fish themselves, it's more the people that create them in my opinion.

I've always thought of guppies as feeder fish and never understood why anyone would want to keep them
But each to their own, I personally think that cichlids are the smartest and most friendly of the FW and that catties are beautiful in their own special way

I can't really say I hate them, but I don't really care for any tetras or barbs. only good use, imo, for tiger barbs is to get chased around by cichlids.

I guess the only thing I don't really like is a black skirt tetras. I only dislike them, because I've had them kill way too many other fish I've been keeping...just me, maybe a black skirt tetra tank might be interesting...Heidi

I don't hate them so much but I really don't like them, especially in my own tanks... angelfish. My mom loves them, so she insisted that she be able to get a couple for our 60-gallon tank. One has died already. Wimpy little fish.

I'd be hard pressed to think of one. There are lots of fish that I'm not interested in right now (although that can and probably will change; after all, once upon a time I probably wouldn't have been interested in shelldwellers!) but "hate" is a pretty strong word. What'd any fish ever do to me?

Well I think Plecos are incredibly ugly and creepy. Never had one never will.

Flowerhorns I can't stand either. Thankfully that particular craze is dying out here in Asia (only to be replaced by the Arrowana craze which is resulting in a lot of beautiful 1-2' fish been kept in 30gal tanks]:|)

I don't like most cichlids because their generally aggressive personalities.

I don't like most livebearers because they breed too much, they are ugly, and they always seem to die for no apparent reason.

I don't like most barbs because they tend to be really boring.

I do not hate any fish. Each fish has its own unique looks and personality. I hate the way fish are bred or died for their looks but I do not actually hate the fish. I am not very fond of -parrot fish as they are very hybrid and they can't really swim properly. bubble eye goldfish look terrible the way they had to be careful of they silly eyes. to be honest I like all fish and I don't think anyone should hate something.(Especially plecos, why does everyone hate them? they think sailfin plecos are ugly and long finned bristle nose and peppermint catfishes? How can anyone think discus are ugly either? Unvelievable!:%)

I don't 'hate' any fish in particular, but neither do I find any domesticated strains of goldfish (Carassius auratus) to be aesthetically pleasing - the same goes for Betta splendens (but not others of the genus), gouramies (except the 'chocolate' and true 'giant'), the archetypical small schooling tetra, 'non-whimple' serrasalmids, Corydoras catfish, black ghost knives, 'rams', discus, and most barbs.

See a full-grown Oscar in a tank that's the proper size for it and it is actually quite handsome ... just be careful putting your fingers near it

Trouble is, with Oscars, a "proper sized" aquarium just for one is at least 6ft long. For several, you're looking at a 12ft behemoth in the living room ... and my living room isn't big enough for a tank that size to physically fit in it

I don't care much for oscars. Saw a "full grown" one at the lfs once and it completely freaked me out. Although that might have had something to do with it being in a tank that was too small for it...

"Fancy" goldfish. They look uncomfortable and just plain ridiculous. It's like someone took an egg, put some fins on it and gave it an incredible poop machine.

I also have a strong dislike for parrot cichlids, for same reasons as the goldfish, and for the whole hybrid reason.

And finally. I don't like neon tetras. Why? Because EVERY TANK HAS A FREAKING NEON SCHOOL! :%)

Oh, and. Veil tail oscars. Honestly, what the crap? It's like putting Bubba the construction worker in a frilly mini skirt...

I don't actually hate the things I mentioned in that quoted piece of mine, but I certainly lament their having being brought into being by people who should have known better.

Personally, Bristlenoses give me the shudders appearance wise, because they remind me of those Surinam Toads that carry their tadpoles on their backs ... admittedly those creatures have evolved naturally to rear their offspring in that manner, but when the tadpoles have left, the female looks as if she has leprosy. Oh, shudder. Some of the more outlandish Bristlenoses give me the same shudders. I do admit, however, they're superb algae destroyers!

One fish that I'd think twice about keeping is Phago maculatus, the Pike Characin. I wrote a post about this about a year and a half ago, in which I described it as "the nastiest fish in the aquarium". It predates other fishes by biting their fins off to immobilise them, then strips their scales, and finally eats the flayed corpses after they've had a lingering death. It will only eat live fish, and I'd be very wary of subjecting a feeder fish to that kind of ordeal before it met its end. Phago maculatus even has a facial expression that suggests that it obtains some kind of sadistic pleasure from its grisly activities. This is very defiintely a fish I'd steer clear of.

[Edit : here's a link ...]

http://animalia.nexenservices.com/V2/index.php?page=fiche&cat=poissons&id=75

[End Edit]

As for Jelly Cats Pseudopimelodus fowleri (which has been renamed, incidentally - it's now Cephalosilurus fowleri) they have a certain Gargoyle like appeal ... and Richard Hardwick, the oddball keeper from Practical Fishkeeping, has one he's very fond of

One fish that also makes me shudder somewhat is that weird new Glassfish species Shini discovered some time ago with that weird molten glass lump on its head.

Alright, I admit it, I like my fish 'cute and cuddly' to some extent

Well, In the right habitat all fish can flourish and be very interesting. now a red devil in a tetra setup might seem ugly, and a piranha in an oscar tank might seem mean as hell, and believe you me i've seen both, but every fish is beautiful in its own way. And if you dont think so, try breeding them!

But fish I "dislike" are toadfish, carp, stonefish and other fish that really annoy you when fishing.

AngelEel, I'm actually quite attracted to that deep sea tube shoulder fish of yours ... I mean, a fish that has luminous squirting bazookas in its shoulders! How can you not be impressed with that kind of evolutionary ingenuity?

In any case, it's a deep water fish, so you won't be seeing it in an aquarium any time soon. Same goes for weird things such as the Black Swallower, Chiasmodon niger. This pic is a farily good illustration of the fish, which can actually swallow something larger than itself ...

http://www.nzine.co.nz/images/articles/chiasmodon_lg.jpg

This is the original article it came from on deep water fishes off the New Zealand coast (so any NZ board members can bask in some glory at how wonderful their oceans are!):

http://www.nzine.co.nz/features/peterbatson_interview.html

While quite a few deep sea fishes may not be 'pretty', they're certainly fascinating.

Oh, and here's what Fishbase has to say about Chiasmodon ...
