Yes most cichlids tend to do these to mark out there territory or a possible breeding area which in most cases are both the same.

One of the few who Mbunas who doesn't do this is the Rusty, be he is one of the few also that has teeth!

You have a few options:

1. Ignore it (it's basically, what I've chosen to do)
2. Move the gravel back to cover the holes (I was doing this, but I found filling the holes each and every day became more of pain...)
3. Rearrange the tank and wait for them to start movinggravel again (because let's face it, they will do it again soon:%))

I compare it to humans using sidewalks...we do use them, but if there is a shorter distance between the two we tend to use itso the cichlids do the same, hey look there's not a cave here, and we want one here, ok folks lets start moving the gravel:%)

I just like to call them my little landscapers. Mostly what they do in my tank is make caves around the openings to the ones already there. You'll get used to it. And you'll start to laugh at how quickly they put these new "caves" back after you gravel vac. Just one of the many reasons why cihclids can be so amusing. :88)

My Yellow Labs. move the gravel as they like, they also dig holes & then pile it up one corner. The gravel is never the same.
