I would stick with catfish and other bottom dwellers as they are peaceful but can defend themselves.

umm. i am not good at knowing any kind of water animal than fish so newts aren't my thing. if i knew some more about the newts i would tell you about the rams compaitblity. but if these are small newts with really small mouths then a ram would do o.k, but if these are big mouth newts then no, i would go with a angel or something. again i am not really good or know anything about newts so i don't want to give u wrong info.

I really wouldn't suggest most fish. An angel would be too tall for alot of terariums. Any tank that would be tall enough for an angel would be too tall for a newt. They need acess to air, and they would tire out very fast in a big tank. Plus you need land areas.

What you can have really depends on the size tank, like all things. No matter what the size, it's risky, but you could maybe have a betta, corries, or some guppies with newts. I would suggest another herp though. ADFs would look very nice. Just make sure you don't buy ACFs cause they sell them as ADFs alot of the time.

Many fish will either be consumed by the newt, outcompete it for food (unless it is fed in a separate container), or pick at its soft body (potentially instigating fatal bacterial infection). However, cohabitation is by no means utterly out of the question.

Can you describe your present setup?

sure my newt is mainly water based so i have a 15 gallon tank, filled up with maybe 4 inches of water and caves for my newt to hid in and climb out of the water on. Like i said he is mainly water based so the decorations are used mainly fo hiding places. Also to circulate the water i have a filter that uses air stones (forgot what it is called) i think with my set-up something like a cory would be good but it would have to be larger cus my newt is like 5 inches and he might eat a really small fish (providing he can catch it "he can hardly get drownung crickets". As for ADFs, no my newt would eventually attack them. Sadly petstores sometimes keep them in the same tank and it is common to see ADF bodies hangin out of the paddle tail newt's mouth.

oh paddle tail, I assumed you were talking about firebellies.
Since we're talking about a bigger tank with a bigger fish, you sould shoot for upper to middle water space. Less chance of the two animals interacting.

Fish that can go with firebelly paddle tails:

-Anything that will not attack the newt
-Anything that will not be consumed by the newt
--Fast Fish
--Fish too Large for the newt to consume
-Anything that can live in *usually* little water

I had a female betta in with a paddletail fire belly newt, and it did just fine. She was too quick for him to catch her, plus he is use to me hand feeding him crickets.

Yes, those would be fine. I would go with the white clouds though. That way, you do not have to buy a heater for the water. Also, the newt needs very little land. Paddle tails are VERY aquatic, and spend about 95% of the time in water.

I've only seen my newt come out of the water on VERY rare occasions. You just need some driftwood for it to be able to climb out of the water to get air.
