Pair of cherry barbs or a trio of male Endler's livebearers?

Paradise fish get too large and active to be kept in a 2.5 gallon.

A dwarf gourami would need a larger tank as well, and I think that white clouds would be too active. They spend a lot of time swimming around, and would appreciate a good deal more room. Personally, I'd go with the cherry barbs. They tend to be calm fish, and don't need to be kept in large groups like other barbs.

Just to clarify, you will need a heater if you want tropical fish. A twenty-five watt heater should do the trick.

Smaller killifish! Most serious breeders prefer to keep them in the super-small tanks

I second the cherry barb notion as the albino pair that currently reside in my 10 gallon are stunnimg with the addition of dark substrate and background.

You don't need a heater for most killifish. They don't need much if any filtrateion as long as you change the water, and they have some intense coloring! I was given a pair and they are pretty cool.
