When buying a kit, remember that most of the items that come with the tank are usually very minimal in quality. You are typically better off buying the tank and the necessary equipment separately as you can then get what is really needed. Also the quality is usually better. It may cost you a bit more in the long wrong, but is usually a much better way to go.

Do you have a brand name? Most kits that come in boxed packages are pretty good. However, the ones that stores put together themselves are usually full of stuff they can't sell and are trying to get rid of. For example, I saw a 55 gallon "kit" that had neon pink gravel decorated with alligator heads.

My first tank was a 29g kit. I upgraded the filter and lighting eventually. I think if you're just starting out they're ok, then as you learn you can upgrade on that tank or move on to a second

Moving some of the water over won't hurt, but moving some of the gravel over would be even better: it will help seed your new aquarium. Even moving a decoration from one of your established tanks would help.

also filter media from the established tanks would help. the cartridges from the smaller filters may not fit perfectly, but just them being in there will help to seed the new filter media.
