so this 10g tank that i got yesterday came with a penguin mini filter, but i really liked the ac20 filter that i found at the lfs today so i got that instead. which would you say is better, or which do you prefer if you've owned either model?

I have the aquaclear and it does an excellent job, but the penguin has a biowheel. There both good filters, and I don't think you can go wrong with either.

actually the penguin does not have a biowheel, unless it comes with the filter inserts plus i found that for the cost of new inserts, i could get the AC filter instead, and i like the design of the ac20 very much. if i decide to do carbon i can always get some more, and i can just rinse out the media every time it needs it instead of buying new cartridges

I use the Aquaclears because of the flexibility you have with the media and the fact that you don't have to buy those expensive catridges. Either filter is a good choice.

Both filters are good so it's really a matter of prefrence. The ac model does offer more flexibility with your media, the penguin comes with a cartridge which you just replace. my penguin does have a bio wheel. Actually, it took a while to choose between the two, I opted for the bio wheel, but often wished I'd chosen the other.

I have the aquaclear 20 on my 10g and I love it. The filter media is very inexpensive so I can change it very often and not worry about spending alot of money on cartridges. I like that the flow is adjustable because it makes it so much easier to feed my fish and keeps the food on top of the water. I don't have any experience with the penguin filter. I did consider it when buying a new filter for my 10 but I chose the AC. In my opinion it is great.
