Try 1", They can't swallow them hole, but they will nip and shred them to death.

Are there other FW fish in there? They won't appreciate the salt at all.

Hydrometer is the word you're looking for.

To transition your puffer to brackish, you need to use saltwater aquarium salt - not plain old aquarium or table salt. You'll also need one of those things that measure salinity (hygrometer? I can't recall for the life of me what they're really called). Google brackish water aquariums and you'll find a world of information.

Often these puffers are born into pure freshwater. But as they age, they move into higher salinity water. Some species end up needing full saltwater as adults.

Most of the puffers that fit this description will live in freshwater, but they will not flourish, and will not live as long and healthy lives if their needs are not met as they age.

Good luck, to you and your puffer.

The puffers eating the tankmates is what I'd worry about.

Not sure what kind of fish you keep, but DPs don't get bigger than 2 inches. They may nip fins, but they can't eat most fish.

I have a DP in a community tank, it has been in one for a bit over a year. Absolutely no problems with him. There is plenty of room, and many hiding places available, and many plants also. I believe agression is more dependent on the fishes personality. Sure some definetly WON'T work, but some individuals definetly WILL work. The main thing to insuring all fishes health is closely monitoring the fish after its introduction. If you do not have another option for the puffer if it is aggressive, you may not want to try it. If you have a pet store that would take the fish back as a trade, or an extra tank (they only need a small one if by themselves) give it a shot. Mine has been a very rewarding experience. It lives with 2 adf's, 8 blue tetras, 5 glass catfish, 1 albino BN, a large striped raphael catfish, and an african knife fish in a 55 galloon that is overfiltered. Be prepared to get small snails and frozen food, though, as mine will nt eat flakes or pellets. Mine even gets along with a colomesus asellus several times the size of the DP.

plecos, cories, and other bottom feeders if the tank is big enough. Possible tougher schholing fish like T-barbs. I think that site (the one that says shrimp and ottos) is talking about smaller tanks (3 - 10 gallons) You could have more choices in a bigger tank. Some people suggest African Dwarf Frogs, but I'd be careful as frogs are very sensative.

Basically, anything that is small enough to not eat the puffers, but does not have long, flowing fins (bettas, angelfish, discus). It's hard, but not as hard as you'd think.
