leongreenway![]() Enthusiast Posts: 205 Kudos: 199 Votes: 0 Registered: 23-Feb-2005 ![]() | My Boss at work has the following 2 New Guinea Rainbows 1 Angel 6 Neon Tetras 3 guppies 4 Corrie 3 Golden chinese algae eaters 1 Red Dwarf Gourami in a 110 Litre tank. in a different discussion one of the users pointed out to me that the Chinese Algae eaters can get to about 30cm. this will be a problem. I know this is right. They also said that Angel may eat the tetras when it gets big enough. I can see this happening as well now. I spoke to the boss and he turned round and said (wait for it) Fish only ever grow to a percentage of the size of the tank. I do not believe this for a second. Can anybody clear this up as he was totally convinced and said i was talking rubbish. Leon |

But their internal organs continue to grow. Which means you end up eventually with deformed fishes. To give you an idea what it's like for the fishes, being kept in cramped quarters with inadequate swimming space, imagine this. Take Carl Lewis (former world famous athlete) and stick him in a 6ft x 6ft cell for 4 years with just one small window and a hole in the ground for a toilet. And imagine what his state of health will be like at the end of this little exercise. Welcome to the world of all too many aquarium fishes. Ask your boss if he'd like me to come along and stick him in the aforementioned cell and feed him slops for 4 years. Chances are the mere thought of being deprived of his BMW and Rolex will scare the living c**p out of him enough, let alone the rest ![]() Chinese Algae Eaters can reacn 30 cm. And also become increasingly aggressive with age. Angelfishes can reach a body length of 5 inches, with a height of 10 inches from tip of dorsal to tip of anal fin. Long before they reach that size, they consider Neons to be lunch. And, as someone who had a magnificent breeding pair of Angels as a teenager (I'm now 43), the male being exceptional because his finnage was resplendent (this was an 11 inch tall fish!) I'm in a position to know. What's more, I've bred Panda Catfish. These are lovely little guys, but very fussy about their living conditions. If everything isn't just right, they curl up their fins and die. Mine have spawned 70 times in less than two years. So if your boss says "what does he know?" when you pass this on, tell him I was probably keeping fish at the same time as sperm met ovum to create him, and if he wants to pick a fight with me, bring it on ... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

They do only grow to the size of the tank, if they are a hardy fish. They become what is called Stunted. This is when the organs keep growing and the rest of the fish doesn’t. This results in a very slow and painful death. Sadly this is only possible if you have a good sturdy fish like an Oscar or a Gold Fish. Most fish will not live long enough in too small of conditions to ever have to deal with it. It’s just inhumane, and we all do our best to inform people of this, so we can prevent it. Your voice will not always be heard. Sometimes you have to just give up. Find satisfaction in the fact that you tried. |

Aboves correct....maybe convince your boss that a 55 or a 75 gallon would look so much more impressive than a dinky little 29. ^_^ [hr width='40%'] It only hurts when I breathe" ![]() |

To be told and then constantly ignore the information is as Cali said c**p, I'm sorry to say it, but it is. Cali I like the propositions you have for the boss, and let's just reduce his closet to 2ft, by 2ft, by 2ft just for the fun of it, and you could extend his stay to 10 years!]:| I know the last time I had an angel, I got him when he was tiny (quarter size maybe) when he finally passed due to a fight with his tank mate (I didn't know better at the time) he was a good 5-6 inches in body size, not counting his finnage, and he was only in a 20 long...tell him that if he wants to pick a fight...I'm willing to take him on too, he needs to pick the fight with someone his own size-Heidi "I've got a great ambition to die of exhaustion rather than boredom."
