I personally have not kept them. The biggest problem is that most of them get far too large to be kept in a home aquarium. I don't know if anyone here has kept them or not, but if you try at http://www.thepufferforum.com I'm pretty sure htere are people there who have kept them.

I don't personally keep any, but my fav LFS has one or two. They're adorable... but they're almost the size of a volleyball. o.O

Speedy is the resident porcupine puffer... they got him from a public aquarium or something that was going to be shut down. To give you an idea... the aquarium had to check to make sure he was compatible with the sharks in the shark pool that the LFS was going to put him in (2000 gallon pond which was the only tank they had that would be big enough for the puffer). They came back with the good news that Speedy wouldn't eat the sharks! These are three to four foot sharks, I'm going to take a stab and say bamboo, black tipped and another variety I don't know the name of. I could be wrong about the names I have given, too. Not much into sharks.

One of the puffers is in the pond with the sharks, one has his very own pool (about half the size). They're SO cute that you just want to pick them up and squeezie-hug them, but well, I'm sure the name porcupine isn't ill-fitting. That cute lil smile... and they're smart, too. I watched the LFS employee feed him, then Speedy came up to me and was spitting water at me. I saw a piece of his food that had escaped his attention and said, "look, you missed a piece" and pointed to it. You'd think he understood every word I said because he gave me this look, turned up his "nose" so I could see that little smile, then dove down to pick up the scrap of food!

Other than that, I can't give you any technical info on them, but they ARE adorable. They need a BIG tank and it sounds like they can't have much in the way of tankmates, unless you want to go for one of those three foot sharks.

~Meow. Thus spoke the cat.~
