I've got a ten gallon tank with only a blue gourami and a buenos aires tetra. I really would like something else in it - it looks so empty. What would go well with the possible aggressiveness of the gourami and would be hardy enough to live in 75F water? Either schooling fish or one of something bigger would be fine. Thanks for the input.

First of all, a 10g tank is too small for a Blue Gourami- these are a large fish that reach around 6 inches, really the minimum tank size for such a fish is 33 gallons.
Second, Buenos Aires Tetras are schooling fish, and unfortunately also get too big for a 10g tank, reaching 3-4 inches. They should be kept in no smaller than a 33g tank as well, with no less than 5 other friends of their species.
There are lots of fish you could put in a 10g, but those arent them.
I would take those fish back, and go with something like this:
1-2 Dwarf Gouramis or Honey Gourami, or Flame Gourami, or Sparkling Gouramis- sparklings you could probably put 4-6 of in a 10g they are tiny!
Then for tetras, you could do a school of 6 of 1 of the following species:
Glowlight Tetras
Lemon Tetras
Neon Tetras
Cardinal Tetras
Rummynose Tetras
Black Neons
Also, you could chose something other than a tetra instead, again a group of 6:
Harlequin Rasbora
Pencilfish
Guppy
White Cloud Mountain Minnow
I hope this helps you somewhat!

Yeah, both of you helped a lot.

However, I just don't know what I'm gonna be able to do with the gourami and buenos aires tetra. I've had them over six months now, and they've been fine. As always, the LFS employee failed to share with me how big they got (it was my very first tank, and I wasn't aware of certain species until I saw them that day). Since then I've done my research, and I feel much more comfortable with other types of fish.

Personally, I'd love to start over with that tank, but I have no idea what to do with those two fish. If I can get rid of them somehow, I'd love to get something else. However, as I said before, the tank has no heater, so the water is at a constant 75F, and I'd have to get fish that can handle the lower temperatures.

If you have any suggestions as to what I can do with those fish, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks for your help, and I'm looking through your previous stocking suggestions to see what I like best.

Thanks again.

Hehehe, wow lol sorry it got messed up..

You can call the local pet stores in your area, see if they take fish for a store credit (seeing you want to start over)

You could post in the classified section on this site.
You could go to Aquabid.com
Or aquaauctions.com

When you restart your tank what type of fish would you like in it??

Post back,

Yeah, I may try the local stores and see if anybody has any interest in those fish. I'd like to get rid of em for sure.

I was thinking about starting over with some schooling fish of some kind. I've always wanted that look in one of my tanks - maybe neons or cardinals. Any better ideas for schoolers?

I also was hoping to get something else a little bigger, maybe one or two of them, that would stand out and be the focus of the tank. Something colorful, yet peaceful. Others have suggested rams, but I'm still not sure what I want to do. Any suggestions here also?

Once again, it's only a 10 gallon, and it's not heated (constant temp of 75F).

Thanks again!
