I unplug and turn off everything. I think it is dangerous because if something fails and the safety switch doesn't work. You can get electricuted. It doesn't hurt to have things turned off for a about 30 mintues. I have everything plugged into a power board any way.

well clearly I tempted fate by posting here. Just scared myself witless because as I was WCing the 25G the heater exploded - well it went sort of bang in the water and my life flashed before me!

So i will be a good girl guide in future and switch off the heaters!!

I unplug the heaters and filters, but generally I leave the hood plugged in so I get enough light to do a good job and don't suck up anything I don't want sucked up.

While we're talking about electrics, what does everyone do when there's a lightning storm?

Nothing special for a lightning storm. All my equipment is on a surge protector.

Same here, I just get nervous if we lose power for an extended period of time.

Surge Protector here, otherwise I would lose my mind trying to plug everything inand if I lose electricity for any time, I just pull out the "Bubble Boxes" and turn them on...They do a pretty good job of keeping oxygen in the tanks, and can run almost forever of 2 D batteries... I know they are only supposed to run a 10 gallon, but I use them on my 29, and 55 in the past (not needed to on the 125 yet)and they do the job heidi

I haven't really thought about unplugging things. Usually I sucker Heidi into doing my water changes. If she ever gets shocked, I start unplugging.

I turn of the two heaters reason they would well below the safety level water height.

The Eheim Canister is external and is not necessary.

If I had any electrical fittings in the tank (pump etc) I would turn it off common sense.

Another reason both sons are electricians. Remembering you only make one mistake with the combination of electricity and water.

You mean that once things are plugged in they can then get unplugged or turned off

And there is something about living life dangerouslywater and electricity are fun to play with at the same time

Vic,
Most instruction manuals will tell you unplug electrical devices incase of short and possibility of electrocution. Death can be hazardous sometimes, I not saying that your tank will kill you though.

I leave everything on.

if something shorted out, the shock would probably be greatly reduced depending on how big the tank was.

Like, if you had a 5 gallon tank, yea, that this is gonna shock you pretty bad, but if you have a 1000 gallon tank, when you put your hand in the water, you would just feel little "tingles"

I guess i can vouch for that, since i got shocked when i was little by sticking a knife in the outlet.

When maintaining my tank I switch everything of best to be safe than sorry I think. Its such a big tank that it would take a long time for the temp to alter anyway.

I have everything plugged into a surge protector that I do always turn off before I do an tank maintenance. I've never really thought about taking the extra step and unplugging it from the wall outlet. Though I guess it would be a good idea to start.

Voted for: I unpluf/turn off some things

When the 55g gets a WC I unplug the heaters only. I saw racso pop a heater once while reaquascaping, and that was enough convincing for me

When I'm cleaning the betta tanks, I unplug the filters so I can carry the tanks to the laundry room and go to work.

Sometimes.

It depends on the water level.

First thing to go off is the heater and then cannister filters if I really need to.

Guilty - most of the time everything is on. Very close to electrocution in the early days before getting the hang of things!
