I have had both of these fish together. They got on fine.

Just as long as you have a few tiger barbs as they like to play with eat other and dart about with each other.

They will be fine.

There are a few factors that will determine if this set up will work or not:

1)Starting with juvie tiger barbs

You said you already have them. What size are they? I had 3 in my community tank a while back, but I got them when they were only about 3/4 of an inch. Because they gre up with the other fish, they tended to leave them alone.

2)Plants

These, whether real or fake, will give the platys places to hide.

3)What tankmates are the platys used to?

Weird as it sounds, I'm serious. If the platys were thrown into a tank at the LFS with fish that would be aggressive towards them and seem to be ok healthwise, they've learned to hold their own. If they've been with much more docile fish in the shop, putting them in with fast moving tiger barbs will stress them out at least at first, but they would probably get used to it.

4)Tiger barb scool size.

As RAST mentioned, they tend to keep the nippiness within their school if it is big enough. The number you mentioned should be fine.
