Has anyone heard of this fish?

I it in petland today. It was in a brackish tank with monos, archers, and some colombian shark-catfish. I can't find any info on it, but it looks alot like an arowhead puffer.

Could this be the fish?

If that's not it, look around this link:

It looks similar to that, only it's a rusty red color. Kinda a cross between that and an arrowhead. It's not on that site. It would be cool if it's rare as it was only $5 and I have an empty 20 gallon!

That is a Congo Puffer (T murius). Generally sells for around $50+ for a red one. No tank mates, same care & feeding as a suvattii. Strictly FW fish.

Here's mine: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v345/Pufferpunk/Pufferpics/Jeni-Tmiurusavatar.jpg

I call her Punkster (Punky for short)!

By golly, thats it! I can't see your fish, but, if you go to puffernet, the pic on the top right looks just like it.

So, do you think it's worth it? Would a 20 gallon long be alright for one or two? Do they move around alot, or are they on the boring side? $50 fish for $5 still is very nice. Or am I better off sticking to guppies? And it's sold in brackish water, so would the puffer be sick? I know fiddler crabs sometimes die from being put in fresh water, even if you transfer them to brackish. Are the puffers at the store too far gone, or can I still switch them to fresh?

Well, they're one of the more boring puffers, they tend to sit on the bottom doing nothing most of the time. A 20 would probably be a little small for one, mostly because of the bioload they place on the system.

Not totally sure what you're into, but you may be better off with guppies.

I have been raising one in my 15g since it was 1". She's around 3" now. I do 50% weekly water changes & she seems fine. I think a 20g should fine for one. Mostly stays burried under the sand up to her eyeballs, unless hungry. She's still one of my favorite fish. No tankmates, not even their own kind! Well, maybe a large snail, she seems to ignore them...

I believe if you copy that address I gave you into your url, you should be able to see her. (Ok, I fixed the link so you can)

ok, no puffer

As much as a pair of eyeballs sticking out of the sand appeal to me, I think I'll get something more active.

Thanks for the help though.

EDIT: ooo, I can see her now. The coloring's very nice, much better than the ones by me. They are only a dark rusty red in color, not bright like yours. Enjoy!

Yeah, I waited 4 years for a nice, bright, red one like mine. Those brick colored ones, are considered the orange morph. There are also brown & marbled-grey ones.
