hi everyone, thinking about redoing my tank.
it is a 75 gallon tank with fake plants and a large piece of drift wood, right now it has a varity of small tropical fish.
i want to replace these fish with something a little bigger, has to be hardy, and i would like it to be able to eat live food like feeder fish

thinking maybe a oscar, but what would be good with them especially to keep the bottom clean? what about pictus catfish?
thanks

Why something that eats live fish? That just ends up costing more money and it runs the risk of introducing a parasite/sickness to your tank

I say, 2 Severums with a medium sized (when full grown) Pleco.

A few lima shovelnoses and several members of a large pike cichlid species makes for a good tank.

another good mix would be a green terror and a jack dempsey... very aggressive and will eat live fish. beautiful looking also.

if u are planning on getting a really large tank after that 500+ gallon's then the perfect fish would be a red tailed catfish, even though it may need over a 5000+ gallon aquarium. but on a smaller note, smaller type of gar, and a raphael cat, or something of the same idea, but larger. or u can house 1 flower horn.

I would say Jack dempsey, they are very hardy, their colours can be quite intense, they are smart, and it is really kool to watch them hunt a school of minnows.

Like the sceond poster stated, if you don't wean these predatory fish off live food, it will:

a. cost you a damn fortune

b. compromise the health of your fish

Lima shovelnoses are good cleaners for preadatory tanks (though they will need their own source of food). The JD would be a good choice-oscars are a big large for 75s. Just because feeders are quarentined does not make them safe for ingestion. Live feeders should be home bred and/or comprised mostly of crustaceans. Gut loaded ghost shrimp make nice feeders.
