carpe_diem![]() ![]() Fish Addict *Dreamer* Posts: 555 Kudos: 292 Votes: 51 Registered: 18-Apr-2004 ![]() | I just got home from a short holiday to find my 20g tank transformed into a morgue :#( that hot 44 degree new years day in sydney would have turned my room into at least a 50 degree oven... i lost all but 7 of my albino cory fry (parents didnt make it )my bristlenose survived, my african butterfly fish and 1 enamel fin tetra. So now my tank looks pretty much bare... my cories are still babies.. about 3 weeks old.. So any suggestions for what i can restock my tank with? I dont want to be overstocked so thought i might get some suggestions.. thanks! |

Would it be safe to add a bolivan ram maybe? I want to add some colour... Would like a breeding pair if its possible as i love having babies... |

With the massive ammonia spike from the massacre ( ) you'll want to make sure your water quality is stable before worrying about adding anyone!.With a 20 gallon tank I prefer smaller active fish rather than somewhat larger slow or semi active fish...to me it just makes the tank look more alive :%). Smaller barbs (cherry or gold) rasboras or I've got white cloud mountain minnows in mine and they're always chasing each other about :%). You might also see if an LFS in the area has some similarly sized corys to fill your school back up ![]() ^_^ ![]() ![]() |
carpe_diem![]() ![]() Fish Addict *Dreamer* Posts: 555 Kudos: 292 Votes: 51 Registered: 18-Apr-2004 ![]() | Ive tested the water and everything seems fine.. ammonia was 0ppm. I wont be adding any fish for at least another week and it will be a gradual thing. I was going to work on some plants and decorations as i never got around to this. I was just looking for some ideas of what i can add having the african butterfly fish in there i dont want to buy any fin-nippers by accident.. |
carpe_diem![]() ![]() Fish Addict *Dreamer* Posts: 555 Kudos: 292 Votes: 51 Registered: 18-Apr-2004 ![]() | I also have 9 not 7 of my albino cories left and they are all around the same size.. tiny and so cute! ![]() Will that be enough for a school? |

carpe_diem![]() ![]() Fish Addict *Dreamer* Posts: 555 Kudos: 292 Votes: 51 Registered: 18-Apr-2004 ![]() | At the moment there isnt anything else in the tank.. so its pretty much just theirs! Will i have to seperate these? or should they be fine? Any suggestions of what else i can add to the tank? Im going to visit a couple of aquariums this weekend and need some ideas! I dont know whether to go towards a school of tetras (which im not overly big on) or go for a couple of bigger fish which could be like 'centrepiece' fish..i was thinking of a couple of angel fish.. but i think they might peck at my butterfly fish... or maybe a couple of bolivan rams? any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! |
jasonpisani![]() ![]() ![]() *Ultimate Fish Guru* Posts: 5553 Kudos: 7215 Votes: 1024 Registered: 24-Feb-2003 ![]() | Personally i'll go with a school of small bodied Tetras. Angels get too big for a 20 gal. tank & Rams stay at the bottom for most of the time, just like the Corydoras. So my suggestion would be some Cardinals or Rummynose Tetras. http://uk.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/s8xi5heh/my_photos http://www.geocities.com/s8xi5heh/classic_blue.html http://groups.yahoo.com/group/buzaqq/ http://www.deathbydyeing.org/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/corydoras/ Member of the Malta Aquarist Society - 1970. http://www.maltaaquarist.com |
scott gallant![]() Small Fry Posts: 5 Kudos: 4 Votes: 0 Registered: 04-Jan-2006 | If you would like a breeding pair the best fish to get are convicts. I herd this before just add water and fish (convicts) and your little new borns will come ![]() Convicts become very aggresive and i don't know if you would want aggresive fish but i love my convicts!!!! |
bananacoladafuze![]() Enthusiast Posts: 170 Kudos: 147 Votes: 19 Registered: 20-Mar-2005 ![]() | A breeding pair, or even a single convict, would kill the cories. How 'bout glowlights? Sparkling gouramis? Maybe a trio (1m, 2f) of Beckford's pencilfish or a pair of cherry barbs?______________ Cake or death? |

They stay small enough for a 20 gallon. You could add a school of tetras to add some movement. 20 Gallon Long: Aquaclear 300 2 Bolivian Rams, Mikrogeophagus altispinosus: Gumby and Pokey |
carpe_diem![]() ![]() Fish Addict *Dreamer* Posts: 555 Kudos: 292 Votes: 51 Registered: 18-Apr-2004 ![]() | Thanks for all your suggestions!! I dont know about gouramis.. i find they like to peck at my poor butterfly fish.. who even though looks mean.. hides behind the filter when bothered! such a wimp! ![]() I think a school of tetras would go nice... depending on what ones i can find at the aquarium.. so now the next question is how many do you recommend .. and can i fit a couple of schools of different kinds.... |
